No supported disc burners found

I just got to playing around with iTunes. I have been holding out on purchasing MC9 to see how this "free" app would stand up to it. Well, I've read some of the rants AND the praises. I pretty much like it so far. The smart lists leave a lot to be desired but hey, it's free.

Here's my beef. I have a TDK veloCD burner. A standard burner that I bought at Best Buy. I wanted to give the burner for a spin to see how "pristine" this AAC format everybody is talking about really is. But wait...I look at the preferences to set my AAC bit rate to 192 and I see "no supported disc burners." WTF

I just got off of the tdk site and updated my firmware and nothing. What is that? Has anybody else had this prob? I don't know how much of a deal breaker it is for me because I just finished burning my whole CD collection recently but any new ones don't have an all-in-one app to do this.

If I'm missing something please let me know.

Check the task manager. Is a program named "gearsec.exe" running? If not, iTunes didnt install the gear burning engine or you disabled it.

Yeah, gearsec.exe is running. I don't know how I would have disabled the burner.

This page on the apple Itunes support page lists all the compatible burners. Your TDK and my LG 4040B are not listed: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60806.

Are you saying that it's just not listed or you've tried it and it's not working?

I have a TDK 48x velo and it's working very well with itunes. Getting 10-16x rip speeds when using MP3 import.

What kind of system do you have? Do you know where the cdrom is connected internally??

If the CD burner wasn't recognized at first, it will probably end up the same way as it did for me, which means never working. In my case, I tried with 4 CD drives, 2 of which were burners, from 2 different computers and iTunes simply never recognized any of the CD drives, including burners. The service is running and I did try to stop it and restart it. I also tried uninstalling iTunes as well as all the CD drives from Device Manager, but with no success. Apple will need to go back to their desk and work quite hard this week!

Every other burning software I have installed has always recognised my 2 burners so I'm not going to start messing with my settings/drivers when the problem lies with Apple's software. I'll wait to let them fix it.

iTunes uses the gear burning software to burn. Any burner that works with GEAR will work with iTunes. To check if your burners are supported, go here: http://www.gearsoftware.com/Support/tables/tables.cfm

Would it be possible to let us know which version of GEAR? Maybe Apple didn't use the latest version which could explain some incompatibilities! I know that my CD-RW drive is supported in the few last versions (i.e.: 6.x). I mostly tried with my Lite-On 40x12x48 LTR-40125S with no success so far after 6 install/uninstall/reinstall and all the other quirks suggested so far.

had the same problem with both my CD and DVD burner after upgrading from WinXP x86 to Vista x64... none of my drives were being detected by iTunes, even though everything else on my computer detected them just fine

was able to get it fixed as follows:
1) close iTunes
2) go to http://www.gearsoftware.com/
3) click on "Support"
4) click on "Drivers"
5) download x86 or x64 drivers as appropriate
6) run driver install
7) start iTunes and burn away

I am so glad someone took the time to reply 4 years later (not being sarcastic). Your solution worked like a charm Shadow.

I had this problem with iTunes and Vista. I tried reinstalling the GEAR drivers but it didn't help. I contacted GEAR support who said it was actually a problem because I had DAEMON tools installed:

"The problem with Daemon tools, is that it installs a filter that corresponds between Windows interacted with the recorders on your Machine. This filter conflicts with GEAR’s drivers. We have discussed this matter with Daemon tools directly, and a fix has been implemented for this. Here is a link to our Wiki article: http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/ind...e=SPTD_Drivers "

This worked for me..
