Where did the picture of the jacket cover come from?

I had an MP3 encoded album on my HD and have added it into iTunes.

When I play it on my iPod (Photo), I can see a picture of the jacket cover!!

If I go into iTunes and do 'show info' I can see the picture for all the tracks!

How did it get there?? I certainly didn't add it and the only thing that I can come up with is that its 'embedded' inside the MP3 file?

If this is the case, how much extra data does this add to the file?

Would this be the same as adding 'artwork' to a picture under iTunes?

Any info on this would be appreciated
