Windows 7 Basic Color Scheme

When I play a song, Windows changes my colour scheme to basic, and I get this message:

The following program has performed an action that requires Windows to temporarily change the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic.

It only happens after I have played a song, not when I open iTunes. Also, it only started happening after I upgraded my hard drive on my laptop and did a clean install of Windows. I have iTunes 10.5.3.3 and Windows 7 Home Premium.

Any ideas?

Guesses are you are using the Visualizer and you have an out of date driver for your video card.

Even if you are not using the visualizer, check that driver.

You should also make sure that you installed the proper version of iTunes for the edition of Windows that you are running. There are two versions of Windows 7 Home Premium out there: 32-bit and 64-bit. Apple has a specific 64-bit version of iTunes that you actually have to hunt down, it isn't on the main iTunes download webpage. The standard 32-bit edition is the only one offered on the main iTunes download page for Windows. You have to scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the 64-bit link.

I thought this as well, because I think the first time I downloaded and installed iTunes on this clean install of Windows I did install the 32-bit version, and I realised afterwards and uninstalled it and installed the 64-bit, but that did nothing. But maybe there's some traces of the 32-bit version left? How would I go about removing all traces of the 32-bit version?

Well, before you installed the 64-bit release, you should have gone through the Control Panel and uninstalled everything Apple related including (but not limited to) Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Services, and so on. You can try doing that again. Just look for anything with Apple's name in it and uninstall the program/service. This will not affect your iTunes library in any way, shape, or form. Remember that iTunes is made up of more than just iTunes as Apple has a bunch of other background services that are required for various tasks in iTunes (such as syncing iDevices, home sharing, etc.).

Thanks, this has fixed it! When I reinstalled iTunes though, it came up with a message saying it couldn't read my iTunes Library file because it was made with a newer version of iTunes, but I ran Apple Software Update which updated it, and it works now.

Thanks for the help
