Is there a way of telling if an app upgrade isn't going to run properly on my iPod touch 4g? Or should I stop upgrading the apps I already have?

I noticed that the previous versions of my Apps are going in the recycle bin. If an update of an app causes problems on the 4th gen, can I just restore the previous app from the trash and resync my iPod? Or is there a database file that's not going to like me swapping app versions like that. Any ideas?
