ipod touch 2 lcd and screen replacement

hello,
have a couple quick questions about this.. i replaced the lcd and the digitizer assembly, the lcd worked great but the digitizer touch didnt. when i was tearing it apart i broke digitizer ribbon cable again! anyway, before i order the digitiuzer again i am wanting to know.. when taking apart the second time i noticed i forgot to take a plastic lcd protector off the back of the lcd where the lcd sits against the metal plate. would that plastic protector have cause the digitizer touch to not work by eliminating a contact of sorts? or would it have been something else causing the touch not to work?

just wanting to know if its as simple as replacing the digitizer assembly and it will work now because i took off the plastic protector from the back of the lcd where it meets the metal frame.
