3RD Generation Ipod Touch- Mic Problems

Howdy, folks. I have a 3G IPod touch, as the title states, and I'd like to be using it for voice applications, such as Mumble, Ventrilo, Skype, Teamspeak, the works. But I have a small problem. When I plug in a pair of earbuds that have an in-line mic, things get weird. If I try to listen to music, the player will pause, then resume, and this goes on several times, until it starts activating Voice Control. Yes, the thing where you're supposed to be able to tell you IPod to do things via your voice. Well, it doesn't work too well. Anyways, VC will randomly turn on, then off, then the music pauses and resumes, then it'll fast forward, and this cycle continues until I get annoyed and grab another pair of Earbuds.

So, anyone got some ideas? I can't find anyone way to disable VC, and even then, it's still be pausing and resuming music. I've used a pair of Skullcandy buds and a $120 pair belonging to my brother- same thing.
