Hi Everyone,
I've been experiencing some odd behavior with my 3rd gen iPod Touch. I manually manage the music that is transferred to my iPod from iTunes. Lets say I download a new album from iTunes that has 11 songs. Once the download is complete, I transfer to my iPod. when i drag the 11 new songs to my iPod, iTunes states it is transferring 48 songs, but only transfers the 11 requested songs. It doesn't matter how much music I add, the number that iTunes states it is transferring is alway +37 what is actually requested and transferred. I don't think this is a big problem (it doesn't appear to affect functionality of the device), but I was curious if anyone has ever heard of this issue and any possible ways in resolving it. I'm running iOS 5.1 and also running the latest version of iTunes on my Windows 7 64-bit Home premium workstation. Thanks in advance for any advice you might be able to offer! S79 |

Are the 37 songs still on your iPod? Have you deleted some songs from the iPod? The reason why I'm asking is because I'm also manually managing my songs and you might try this:
In the left hand pane there is a small triangle beside " your iPod". Click it so it faces down like a " v". Now click on the top one " music" it lists all the songs on your iPod. Are some greyed out? At the very bottom of the page it says the number of songs on your iPod. Is it different than the number of songs in iTunes? So try this. Right click and delete any songs that are greyed out, or any black songs that you have removed "from the iPod itself" ( providing you still have them in iTunes, or you no longer want them), unplug the ipod and turn it off. Turn it back on and plug it back in. then copy the songs to your iPod again. Watch at the top to see how many are being copied, then check the number of songs in iTunes and on the iPod. Please post back with detail about how you get on and the steps you took. I'm hoping this will fix your problem, as I had a similar problem manually managing songs until I started removing deleted songs from the iPod music list, either greyed or black. your response also gave me an epiphony. I have a small amount of songs that i downloaded years ago from the iTunes music store, with an old iTunes account. Do you think these might fit in to the equation somewhere? |

To follow up on this issue, I did find one greyed out song on my ipod. I deleted it and the rest of the album that it was on, power cycled my ipod and then added the album back. Alas, the problem persists!
Unfortunately I can't use the song count in my iTunes library as a guage because I don't transfer all of it to my ipod. I'm still at a bit of a loss. |

Sometimes if you have deleted songs from the iPod itself they still show up black in that list. But I'm not sure now if that's your problem. If its not copying the 37 files its not really a bad problem, but I understand that you must be perplexed.
It is probably a good idea to start making playlists and syncing that way but I can understand the trouble and wanting to still manually manage your music. There are ways to remove the songs from your iPod and resync them but the sync could take a while for 11,000 songs.

@ sonnet79 - hopefully its not too late to tell you this but I highly recommend an article about using smart lists to sync and play your tunes. I found it at Share Calendars, Files, To Dos & Photos Online for Free
smartlist_management.pdf Good luck, and have fun with it
