Need firmware and iOS upgrade for 2G

I am a newbie and bought my son a 2G touch. He would like to download apps and games but needs the 4.0 iOS. I've tried to download this but looks like he needs to upgrade his firmware, or are these same things? I'm a bit confused....

All you need is to run the software update in iTunes. iOS and software update in iTunes is considered a firmware update.

64GB iPad 3, 64GB iPhone 5s, 1G 16GB touch, 4G & 6G Silver 16GB nano, 5G 60GB iPod, 1G AppleTV, 2G ATV, Late 2013 27" iMac

I have tried that through itunes and it says it is updated and the version is 2.2.1. Is that the most up to date software I can get or can I upgrade to 3.3 or 4.0?

Perhaps you actually have a 1st generation touch, which tops out at iOS 3.3.1. To check, look at the back of the touch: in the upper left corner there's a piece of black plastic (the antenna cover); if that piece is oval-shaped it's a 2nd-gen touch. OTOH, if that piece has a square-ish corner it's a 1st-gen touch. (Here's a picture of both).

Due to some accounting rules, Apple has to charge $4 or $5 to upgrade a 1st-gen touch to 3.3.1; this Apple article talks about installing the paid upgrade, and has a link to the Store page for buying it.

If it's a 2nd-gen touch, the highest supported iOS version is 4.2.1
