Advantages of Jailbreak on the 4G iPod Touch?

So recently I got a surprise present which was the 4th Generation iPod Touch. I've never been an Apple fanboy but I can't deny the fact that iOS is still, the best mobile OS that's currently available. The question I had in mind is what is the purpose of jailbreaking your iPod?

While I was doing some quick researching, I couldn't find a solid answer (that's regarding the relatively recent iOS 4). As far as I'm aware jailbreaking used to allow you to change backgrounds and such but now even iOS allows you to do that. So is jailbreaking only good if you wish to use *cracked* apps?

Because I don't really want to waste my time jailbreaking my iPod if that is the only advantage as you can get a whole lot of apps free anyway and those which you can't don't usually cost more than £1 or £2.

i'm sure most would agree that getting the cracked apps is probably the best benefit of jailbreaking. i'm very new to the itouch as well. i'm pretty computer saavy. that being said, it took pretty much a whole day to learn and then jailbreak the new 4.2.1 ios. i'm one to learn as much as possible first. i haven't looked in the last couple of days but the biggest drawback is the fact that it's a tethered boot. at least for now. this means that if your battery runs down, you'll have to boot the device with the aid of a computer. it won't power up even after you recharge the battery. this is quite a headache if you're not at home. there are a lot of resources on jailbreaking. do yourself a favor though and read up on as much as you can prior to actually doing it. i would backup and media (photos and videos) before you take the plunge.

with jailbreaking you never have to worry about paying for a useless app. there are so many that it's hard to truly know what is good. i figure this would be worth it alone.

Jailbreaking is good for saving money. you know that you have to pay for a bunch of cool games? Jailbreaking it allows you to get free games. Like the full versions for free. No more paying. And you can download awesome backgrounds like maybe on that was used for a different phone or something. My brother got the Nexus background and it's cool.

I just started looking at jailbreaking. The main reason being I have an iPad and iPod Touch, both contain important data. However I let my kids play with both and I am worried that they will delete or change things for example in calendar or contacts. I tried searching on Apple for an app (which I will happily pay for) which can lock individual apps but only came across an app for jail broken iPads and iPod Touches.
So advantage of jail breaking is not just for saving money but because Apple (for whatever reason) does not provide the users with what we need. I either just use the the devices as entertainment machines or buy a device for each person in the household. Bit silly when one of them is 2 yrs old and I only use it as a last resort.
Really dumb, thinking about it, there are so many iPhone users out there and I am sure they sometimes hand over their phones to a friend to see something but I am sure they don't want them to have access to everything on their phone.

i have recently just jail-broken my 4g 8gb iPod touch and i must say I'm very pleased. For example, some cool features u can find is a 5 app dock, change the battery color, and get the android lock system instead of the old fashioned 4 digits. Also, small things i have noticed is it now gives u battery percentage which is nice. if u go on YouTube and type in cool cydia or cool jail broken features there are TONS of informative videos i also learned HOW TO jailbrek it.

I just went thru the process of jailbreaking my ipod touch 4g via greenposionOn. It appeared to go well (screen indicated jailbreak complete). However, it never rebooted my ipod. None of the apps (Cydia/Installer) was on ipond when I got my ipod back up and running. I did this about 4 times. Same thing. What should I do???? The main reason I want to jailbreak is have internet anywhere/anytime.

Can anyone tell me why my ipod, after being jailbroken, randomly stops downloading apps without me putting in my credit card information? Then it charges me for all of the apps I have downloaded. And it's not that the battery dies or anything. I just all of the sudden can't download anything from the appstore without it asking for the cc info. Help!

You can purchase Apple peels for your iPod Touch and convert your Touch to a smartphone. I recommend Coopee. Nice thing about this feature you can use your iPod Touch like an iPhone. What is even better, the phone is unlocked and can be used with any service provider around the world.

True, there are certain application you can use to make calls on your iPod Touch such apps as Talkatone which uses Google Voice. Problem with this it only works with wifi connection, the number of the receiving party appears to be suspicious on caller IDs, and you cannot receive calls.

I highly recommend Coopee if you are going to convert your Touch into a smartphone. It will only work if the iPod Touch is jailbroken.
