Well, yeah, it kinda does matter. Depending on how proactive Apple is about tracing potentially stolen iPods, you might be receiving stolen property. Whether or not anything ended up happening to you, is definitely not something I'd want to go through to clear my name. Although I'm sure my lawyer would gladly accept my checks to pay for my defense while it's all sorted out.

I don't even know what you're saying anymore. You went the opposite direction with my comment.

It could matter though. You definitely don't know where this iPod touch is coming from other than the person you "won" it from off of eBay. It could have been stolen and now you are receiving stolen property. That is illegal, no debate about it. Now you would eventually be let off the hook as you purchased the item off of eBay and had no idea that it was stolen. eBay would then refund your purchase and everything would be in the clear except for the person who sold you the item. Still, do you want to go through months of hassle or just get everything cleared up now?

I always assume the worst when it comes to life as things often turn out that way. Find a iPod for a cheap price? Well it is more than likely damaged, stolen, or fake. Someone sells you tickets for a reasonable price? They are fakes. Concert t-shirts for $5? They were made at a local print shop and aren't the real things. Someone rear-end you in a collision? They don't have insurance. I can keep going on. So yeah, I assume the worst when it comes to everything.

Question Deleting of media

By harm do you mean deleting media?
If you unlock an iPod that you entered the wrong code for will it delete all of my songs?

Just a little FYI - it may take longer than 4 minutes before you can a response. You might want to wait at least a few hours before bumping your thread. ok so i just won an 16g ipod touch from a 'friend' in a bet, he did have a password on the touch itself, but i obviously need a password to download apps and stuff, now i dont care much bout the songs and vids he has on there, but his apps r pretty kool, i just wnna kno how much this method would take off of the ipod touch, now i dont kno much about ipods in general, my only other ipod besides this one was a old ipod nano, like the first 1 tht came out, so i just wnna kno wat this method will take away, and if and how i have to register

Wink

Plug it into the computer and open iTunes.

Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.

After exactly 10 seconds release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone/iPod in recovery mode.

The iPhone/iPod screen will remain black.

All you have to do is hold down the lock button and turn it off. As you plug the ipod back into the computer, hold down the home button (small circle on the front of the ipod) and it will pop up onto itunes saying it needs to be restored. after its restored, the password will be gone. Hope this helps!

I am in the exact same situation I bought a iPod Touch with a broken screen and got the screen replaced and now it comes up with iPod disabled . Connect to iTunes. I cant get it into DFU mode or to restore and the seller is nowhere to be found. There must be a way.

Forget your passcode? ops:
1. Connect the touch to the computer
2. Go to my computer
3. Make sure your computer shows hidden files
4. Click the appropriate drive for your iPod
5. Navigate to iPod_control
6. Go to device
7. Open _unlocked with something like textedit
8. There is your passcode

Locked or Stollen

Basically ipod touchs can have passwords and get it wrong 10 times and the ipod locks itself Either that or manufactured fault.

Thanks elj2556

Thanks elj2556, after reading all the no help pessimistic responses, I was able to use the stolen ipod I bought for $25.00 from a police man.
Your Message was short, easy, and worked like you stated.
I see it was a year ago when you posted, but I hope you get this thank you note!

Silly pessimistic me, it's not like I gave out the solution back in 2008. Oh wait, I guess you didn't really read through the thread then.

Thanks

Just perused this thread as we found a 32gb ipod touch whilst walking the dogs 5 weeks ago, locked with password and have tried to unlock it so i could find out the owner and return it, local notices, inform police, nowt worked so now following this thread the ipod is restoring to factory settings, hopefully then we will see if it is registered and if there is anyway of contacting the true owner so he can collect it, not all of us are devious, helpful advice that hopefully will return a lost ipod to its correct owner
