I'm thinking of getting an iPod Touch, part of what really attracts me to it is the possibility of using the wifi to browse the internet.
Thing is, at home I have a wireless router, but at uni I get internet off a lan, and there's no wireless available. My laptop has a wireless card - is there a way to set up a connection between the laptop and the Touch, and then share the internet across from one to the other? Has anyone actually done this? (I use XP Pro) |

Not sure how your uni is wired byt you could try this:
Instead of hooking your ethernet straight to your laptop, use a wireless router. Then you'll have wireless at your dorm. |

I've thought of doing that before, but the computer office is well within wireless range and they'd go crazy if I did it.
Would be pretty cool though, and its something I'd consider. I'd still like to be able to set up some sort of bridge to a peer to peer connection though? |

unfortunately no, the touch requires an access point and doesn't work with adhoc networks. I have the same problem at the office.

An ad-hoc connection from your laptop to the touch would be fine. It's what I use.

Well my setup is quite simple. I have wired lan coming into my computer and then I have an ad-hoc connection. All you have to do in windows is make a wireless connection and select 'share my internet connection with this...' (something along those lines) in the settings.
very basic, no adding static ip addresses or anything, all automatic. It's very much the same in osx.

Hello, I tried what you said at my home university but it didnt' work. The Ipod says "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server". Does it has to do with the firewall perhaps?

set up an ad hoc network and connect to it.... you won't be able to browse yet.... then start>run and type nslookup type that number into the dns of the ipod... voila! you should be connected |

I had been using an ad-hoc network with my itouch for the past 6 months or so, but now it's suddenly stopped working. It connects to the network but I am unable to get the internet or get email, (I get a "not connected to the internet" error).
In Vista I have internet connection sharing on like I always had, but my Wireless Network Connection that's being used as the ad-hoc network is stuck saying "Identifying..." until it finally switches to the network name followed by a number. Every time I try to change a setting and reconnect the number increases by one. Does anyone have a similar problem? Could the 2.2.1 update be to blame? (I think it stopped working around the time I updated it.) |
