My 40GB iPod is treated like gold dust - a reference copy, a mighty tome! I wouldn't dream of running, cycling or lending it. The Shuffle strikes me of a great way to fulfil these more 'risky' applications... if I don't win one I might even buy one!

good for people who like to listen to individual mp3s. bad for people like me who like listening to music on a per record/cd basis. Because I can't remember track numbers - the 1 gb would hold more than 10 albums, I'd have a hard time remembering what was what.
I would say, good for putting down a list of your favourites! |

I think the shuffle compliments iTunes and the other iPod lines. I've had a 15gig 3G Pod for almost two years now and I originally used gtkpod on Linux to manage it. Back then, it held my entire music collection and I used it for all of my music needs; on the move, in the car, in the lounge, around the house.
Then I started using a PowerBook at work and fell for iTunes. Even better when the UK online store opened. Later, I bought an Airport Express and started using my PB to stream music around the house. Now I still use my 3G in the car and when I'm away from home but I tend to use the iTunes/AE combo at home. Now I'm looking for something to use down the gym and as a secondary device to placate my other half. I could use my 3G but I'd much rather use something lighter, cheaper and more robust against damage. Along comes the shuffle. Perfect. PowerBook (entire collection): Used around the house via Airtunes iPod 3G (most of collection): Used in car and while travelling iPod shuffle (recent albums/workout mix/random): Used down the gym and ??? My shuffle is on order...

Size and weight is definitely a plus to this item, but cord management is way down. The included lanyard and the long iPod headphone makes for a mess. The lanyard works well, but isn't exactly the most fashionable item to wear.
I've had some problems on the software side, and I've already had to use the "restore" function on the iPod software twice. Sometime iTunes will freeze in the process of copying songs. Copying songs is a burden with USB 1.1 and Apple not including even a short male to female USB cord was really a downside. Battery life is great. I still wish Apple would replace the headphones- they are still uncomfortable. Roland Saekow |

The iPod shuffle is the perfect workout buddy. No more concerns about dropping the ipod, or having to wear a belt for it. The shuffle is light, without any moving parts. And who really listens to more than 120 songs durning a workout?
The perfect complement (not replacement) for the iPod owner. |

The Pod Shuffle is going to bring even more people to the iPod nation, which is good, but I don't think that the product itself is that great. This is really aimed to athletes, not a power user like myself.
When I first saw the Shuffle, I kept thinking to myself "Where have I seen this before?" Then it came to me: my friend had an original Creative MuVo, LCD-less and all. That's the Shuffle's first problem. Not having a LCD is okay on the MuVo, which has only 128 mb of memory (or around 30 songs). But when you're hauling over 200 songs, a LCD becomes necessary equipment. Couldn't Apple make some LCD add-on that connects into the USB port of the Shuffle unit? Also, Apple is really advertsing the "Shuffle" feature. This may be okay for an athlete or someone who likes all of their songs, but I'm very picky when it comes to what song I want to listen to, so the shuffle feature is wasted on me. Of course, the price is great, at only $99 for a 512-mb model, but I think most people would be better suited to the Creative MuVo NX, even if it doesn't have the Shuffle's sex appeal. -iEnigma |

I think that the shuffle is a great move by apple. It makes the greatness of the ipod available to the consumer that cant or doesnt want to spent $300+ on an mp3 player. Although having no idea what song would be comming next or no info. on the song being there is no screen, the shuffle is a great idea just shuffling the songs so there is almost no use for a screen. I use this feature on my ipod all the time even though i have a full one, i tend to pick the songs i really like and soon get tired of them after about 30 times of listening to them. All in all I give it 5 out of 5 stars

I bought a shuffle for my wife for Valentine's day. Since it makes her happy (even though we're still waiting for it), I'm fine with it. For it's purpose, it seems to be a good player. And, yes, size matters. She wants something she can tuck away into her purse and use on the go. The other thing that matters is the fact that we have gone 100% Apple in the last 2 years. She has my old iBook G3 700 12" and is happy as a clam, and I have my PB G4. And let's face it 16 hours (1 GB) of music is more than you're going to need in most situations when you're on the go.

I feel that the ipod shuffle is a great addition to the ipod family. Although I own an ipod already, I am tempted to buy a shuffle just for working out... it'd be so handy, and would probably motivate me to work out more. I think it is appealing to people new to ipods and also to people who already own an ipod.
