Shuffle won't sync

I just received a shuffle for a gift, and they had pre-loaded some songs on it. I already had itunes, so I did not install the disc that came with it and just plugged it in. It erased all the pre-loaded songs, AND now it won't take anything on to it. I get the black circle with a line through it if I try to drag and drop, and if you hit "sync" it says wait until sync complete then says "Done" but the pod is emtpy.

To complicate things, we plugged it in to my boyfriends Mac, and it works fine.

I installed the disc that came with it today, but the same thing is happening. Can't use it on my PC. It recognizes it, but just won't sync.

Anyone else ever have this problem?

Hi gina and welcome to iLounge.

iTunes was probably set to sync automatically and if you don't have any songs in your iTunes library, the iPod will be erased. Go into iTunes->Edit->Preferences and click on the iPod tab. Check the setting to update songs manually.

If this is the newest iTunes version 7, you will need to go to File->Add files to library or Add folders to library. Can't drag and drop anymore.

Hows about when it will sync things from the Itunes store, but nothing else? I was able to get a song from the store, and it came over. I also did a podcast, BUT nothing that is in my library will come on to it. Weird huh ? 1 800 ITunes? 1 800 IPod?

Just an update...We'd set our advanced settings to import as AAC, but those file types won't play on the shuffle. Apple on-line help said it won't play "lossless" or AIFF files. We changed to AAC and all is well.
