Hello, I am a new iPod user, and I have a question about deleting song files from my computer. I have followed the instructions to import CDs to my library in iTunes. This creates the audio file on my PC. I then fill my iPod with the imported songs. Everything goes smoothly and works fine, but I do not want to keep the song files on my computer. It is a waste of space to me. I only want them on my iPod. So I delete the files from my PC. The next time I plug in my iPod, it warns me that the files are gone from my PC, and it then proceeds to wipe my iPod clean. Why is this necessary? Can I prevent this? All I want is to be able to delete song files from my PC's hard drive without causing my iPod to then be wiped the next time I plug it in. Thanks for your time.

Welcome. See the manual manage info:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61148 Set the iPod to manual sync to stop if from auto sync'ing.

honeybee, thanks for your quick reply. This would solve my problem if it weren't for one thing...My iPod's options are not the same as the ones pictured on that webpage you linked me. They are not as colorful, and I don't have the option to manually manage songs and playlists. In my iPod options, I see the following:
Jake's iPod 1.1.3 ------------------------------- [x]Open iTunes when this iPod is attached [ ]Keep this iPod in the source list [ ]Only update checked songs [ ]Convert higher bitrate songs to 128 kbps AAC for this iPod [ ]Use Sound Check ------------------------------- [ ]Enable disk use 240 Songs |---------------------------- 0 MB Data To my knowledge, I have the latest iPod shuffle software (1.1.3) and update for iTunes (6.0.4). Is there some update that I still need to see this option, or is it located somewhere else for me? |

Nevermind, I found out that the shuffle doesn't have the option to manually manage songs. It's a bit of a nuisance to have to waste a gig of space on my computer, but nothing that will actually cause any problems. Oh well =(

you'll have to manual sync your songs.
since auto sync will have your ipod mirror your itunes library.

see, i told you.
don't pay attention to them. THE IPOD SHUFFLE WILL ALWAYS DELETE ANYTHING NOT IN YOUR ITUNES LIBRARY. IT IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER IPODS. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT. (aside from using something other than itunes) Last edited by zip22; 04-02-2006 at 10:03 PM. |
