Well If you want to protect it from water. Put it in a cellophane so that it will not get wet.. But seriously, Apple didn't think about that..Just buy waterproof cases so that you will be protected..

I have a first generation shuffle (white 512MB about the size of a pack of gum) and it went through the washer and dryer. Still works perfectly. Maybe the dryer dries it out enough. However, I don't believe that it was made to be immersed in water. Otherwise that would be an advertised feature.

i accidentally soak my ipod shuffle together with my pants in a washing machine for an hour. but guess what? my shuffle is still playing my fave music after a month that i've totally abandoned it coz i thought it is already dead..
that's what you call a reliable product...

Most electronics, as long as there is no power on it and sometimes even if there is, if it gets immersed in water and is allowed to dry out before use, it will still work. This doesn't mean ir will work reliably immersed in water...such as for swimming laps.
