One reason I didn't like itunes and ipods is that it was more complicated compared to an mp3 player. It is just so simple to hook up a player, open folder, and transfer songs without any software or programs. Recently, I was given a used 5th generation nano so I wanted to give the ipod another chance. I was able to reformat it but itunes doesn't recognize the player. All the player flashes is "do not disconnect." How can I make it so itunes will let me add songs or even recognize it?

Usually this is caused by an old or bad iTunes installation.
Apple of course has help: iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows The usual culprits are not having the current iTunes installed, the iPod Helper service is disabled, the USB cable is bad, or the USB cable is plugged into a hub.
