Bear with an old guy,just purchased 7th gen nano,never had an pod.Before I run riot can I purchase an audio book thr itunes sync with nano and then when read delete from nano and keep in iTunes library for future use.

Yes you can keep the book in iTunes and delete from the nano after you are done listening to it.
That way you can sync it again at a later date, or put onto a different iPod.

As another "old guy", well, early 50's anyway, I highly recommend getting audiobooks from Audible.com rather than the iTunes store. Much cheaper. A monthly membership is a pretty good deal, but if you really like audiobooks, get a platinum membership. For #230, you get 12 credits and up to a year to use them. Most of their audiobooks these days are unabridged and almost all only cost one credit. That means you're getting unabridged audiobooks for less than $10 each. The only cheaper thing to do is steal them.

Actually there is a cheaper alternative in some locations, the public library.
They have a web site where I can download audiobooks for up to 2 weeks for nothing more than the tax dollars I would pay if I didn't use the service (essentially free). They use Overdrive which will work with iTunes to convert the book to iPod format.
