Yes you can keep the book in iTunes and delete from the nano after you are done listening to it.

That way you can sync it again at a later date, or put onto a different iPod.

Have you backed up your iTunes Library this week? If not, you are risking losing your music and playlists....

As another "old guy", well, early 50's anyway, I highly recommend getting audiobooks from Audible.com rather than the iTunes store. Much cheaper. A monthly membership is a pretty good deal, but if you really like audiobooks, get a platinum membership. For #230, you get 12 credits and up to a year to use them. Most of their audiobooks these days are unabridged and almost all only cost one credit. That means you're getting unabridged audiobooks for less than $10 each. The only cheaper thing to do is steal them.

Actually there is a cheaper alternative in some locations, the public library.

They have a web site where I can download audiobooks for up to 2 weeks for nothing more than the tax dollars I would pay if I didn't use the service (essentially free). They use Overdrive which will work with iTunes to convert the book to iPod format.
