I downloaded a number of books to my iPod nano and would like to transfer them to my PC so I can create CD hard copies....I dread losing them in case of damage or disaster. Is there a way to do this?

Normally, the iPod get's it's information from iTunes (your PC) to load stuff like audio books. So they should already be in iTunes or Overdrive or whatever you used to put the songs onto the Nano.
There is a method, though in your case you would need to filter out the files selected to *.m4b files only. Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide | iLounge Article
