Do the numbers stand for letters, numbers, code, or what?

The numbers and letters are the code.

You don't really code in hexidecimal, but I know some ARM Programming.

Firmware Extraction Guide

This is a guide that I've found to extract the firmware for the iPod nano 7th gen. Note that it is completely possible to do on Windows by installing cygwin to get tools like dd and make to compile extract2g. The .img file is extractable via WinImage.

Here is the link: bit.ly Ro42ge (Can't post links yet.)

Note: dd also seemed to work in the guide if I replaced iseek with skip.

It is possible on Windows, but it's a hell lot harder. It takes like 45 minutes to install linux on a PC and it makes things much easier.

What is our next step then? (I can't get any further than extracting firmware.mse because the dd command does not work on the 3 different distributions and computers of ubuntu that I have tried and I don't have a mac)

Our next step is to try sending fw files to the iPod the same way Steven Troughton-Smith did.

Steven Troughton-Smith: Mount iPod nano 6G Resource Partition

Steven Troughton-Smith: iPod nano 6G iRecovery

One thing to add, if you have tried to get to the nanohack.me website but you get a bandwidth error here is a solution.

NanoHack.me | Hacking, on a nano basis

So earlier today I tried restoring my iPod Nano 7th Generation to a modified firmware I made. I took the N31.bootloader.rb3 and deleted it and replaced with a bootloader bin file from an iPhone 2nd Generation firmware. Well let's just say that it didn't go over to well and the iPod basically freaked out and stayed in DFU mode and wouldn't mount. I thought I bricked it until about 5 hours later and it started working again. So I'm not sure what happened then I guess it tries to boot a certain number of times until it gives up and re-formats itself.

Depending on how daring I get I might try several different bootloaders with this and see what happens. Oh FYI if you do this you either need to change info in the manifest.plist or change the name of the bootloader to N31.bootloader.rb3. If anyone is daring and wants to test things out for me I'll send you a firmware file. I think my next attempt will to try the old Nano 5g bootloader it looks really similar so I'll see what happens there.

The old Nano 5g Bootloader didn't really do anything, iPod just auto-restored.

Apps?

Is it possible to make apps for Pixo OS? I'm not expecting games or anything like that but simple display based apps such as metronomes (I'm a musician) or calculators would be nice.

Yes.....it's possible. Could you please at least try to get your posts in the right topic. I'm aware Nano runs off of a basis of Pixo OS, but we don't call it Pixo OS it's Apple OS. Yes apps can be made for the nano.
