Lightbulb Smart Playlist Help?

I have 2 groups of music. My techno which is in excess of 60gigs, and all the rest.

When I buy music from iTunes or rip my own tracks. I keep them in a simple MS Folder/directory. They aren't in that iTunes folder.

My Nano is used for music from the second category "all the rest". The playlist is called All the Rest.

How do I create a playlist which just keeps track of "all the rest files" (new ones added, or others removed off that playlist) SO when I sync, my Nano is up to date/accurate?

I bought a bunch of songs from iTunes, and had to make a new playlist, which included my previous All the Rest playlist and the new ones. I then copied that new playlist (drag/drop) from iTunes onto the Nano to have all my recently purchased music included on the playlist and thus added to the Nano.

I deleted the older, incomplete All the Rest playlist from the Nano

I know this sounds overlay complex. Surely there's a an easier to do this??

I can't make a smart playlist to exclude a specific genre because there's a few techno songs that I want in my All the Rest playlist, ie on the Nano

Thanks in advance.

Make one smart playlist for your non-techno (Genre -is not- techno). This will be automatically updated as you add songs.

Make a 2nd manual playlist where you collect the few techno songs that you want on the nano. You'll have to manually take care of putting songs into this list as you want.

Sync these 2 playlists to your nano.

P.S. Cannot imagine why you mess around with keeping thing is specific operating system folders - completely unnecessary.

I can't remember why I don't have my music in the iTunes folder. I've had an iPod since the first model, and that's how I set it up for a specific reason/s. But I can't remember why anymore haha. But I did have a good reason. It had something to do with me not wanting iTunes to manage my songs. Not sure the reason.

Thanks for the help. That's a start, I'm looking for a method to prevent the creation of a manual list.

I may do it by ratings, rate all the techno a star, and create a smart list to only have music w/out a rating. That requires me to rate things. There must be an easier way. We'll see.

You could also setup a smart playlist with all the techno songs (ie genre is techno) and limit it to random songs and cut the playlist down to a certain size (1000 songs or even just a few GB).

The problem is I have a few that are techno that I want on the Nano too. I can't make them all techno. I don't want the techno files on my Nano. Just the few I have in mind. The others are large files, in excess of 60gigs.

I think the total amount of non techno I have is about 8.6gigs on the Nano (well including the few files of techno I do keep on it)
