iTunes not recognizing my Nano 3rd Gen.

Hello all,
Today I plugged in my iPod to recharge battery and got a msg that itunes was not recognizing device. I updated my iTunes version and the device was recognized. No updates were required for the iPod.
I added some songs, and did normal things. I've had the iPod for a few years and have never had problems with it. For a minute all was right with my world.
A few hours later I wanted to add a couple of new playlists. I created them in iTunes and plugged in and iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod again.

I keep getting a message box from iTunes to sign into my Apple ID account. I apparently have one because my id (email addy) is shown in the upper right hand corner, but I cannot remember my password or security question answer. I've never ever had to use this information before. I don't make purchases online.
I keep asking for a password reset to be sent to my email and nothing. I requested about 5 times over a period of several hours. I am extremely upset and frustrated with iTunes, needless to say. I even added a secondary email addy and checked both spam folders - nothing. Pure silence.

Does anyone here know how to resolve ANY of these problems? Especially how to get iTunes to recognize the iPod. I can't ask at their forums because of the Id account trouble. I'm in a no-win situation cos don't I need to get in to change my iPod to be loaded manually? Please help!!

I use Windows 7.

Thank you so much.

iPods not recognized are usually handled by these articles:
iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes
iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows
