You could type in the error code and message...

That would help.

Try this link Explanation of error codes generated by Device Manager in Windows XP Professional and run the troubleshooter.

Most likely it is the iPod driver that has issues. So if the troubleshooter does not help, try: iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes section 5.

Have you tried uninstalling your USB Ports and letting them reinstall again?

Which version of windows so we can get you closer to a solution.

Section 5 of the Apple link tells you how to disable them in the "If Apple Mobile Device is not listed" section iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes

I am sure that when you right clicked the USB Controller Hub to disable it temporarily when trying everything, you saw the uninstall option. You can use that and wait for it to install again in a few minutes or reboot.

That section also has tips on recognizing USB cable issues vs Windows issues.

Yes my 3rd Gen works find on my Win 7 x64.

Sounds like an uninstall and reinstall of iTunes will resolve this: Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

The link has the steps to completely remove iTunes and Quicktime. You will need to do them all.

No I don't have IM. Working full time at a place that stops external IMs. Besides I am only on the net off and on, the rest of the time I am on an isolated network.

Sound like your iPod USB Port is damaged. Your USB port got cold solder. "Pins not attach to the circuit"

You can not check the pin unless you open up the iPod.
