Can iPod nano plays *any* mp3 files?

I never use any apple product in my life. I am thinking of getting a iPod nano, but I have a few questions

1. Can I copy any mp3 files into the iPod harddisk? I like extracting musics from youtube and packing them as mp3 files. Would I have problem playing these mp3 files with iPod nano?

2. How do I download music to iPod nano? It does not seem to have any USB port. (I could be wrong)

1. Yes, in general any mp3 file can be used with the iPod; once you put the mp3's into the iTunes library.

2. You use iTunes software + a special iPod-to-USB cable to put music onto an iPod. You don't just drag-n-drop from explorer.

You basically use iTunes to manage the content on your iPod. There are other tools available that can be used as iTunes replacements with limited success, but you'll probably find it simplest to just use iTunes.

See our Beginner's Guide to iTunes for more information on getting started with iTunes and your iPod.

The exceptions to the *any* mp3 song are encrypted songs that were purchased from various sites like the old Sony site (defunct), the Zune site, Walmart used to encrypt theirs (are they still in business?), and others.

If the song plays in iTunes, the song will play in the iPod.

Have you backed up your iTunes Library this week? If not, you are risking losing your music and playlists....

To be fair, however, those weren't MP3 files by definition (although I realize not all users may understand that distinction). There isn't really a DRM protection scheme for the MP3 format, so it's pretty safe to say that if you're dealing with an actual MP3 file it's not encrypted/protected and can be played on the iPod.

Sony used its own proprietary ATRAC format. In typical Sony fashion, this format couldn't be played on anything that wasn't made by Sony.

Other online music stores such as Zune, Walmart, the old Napster, et al used Windows Media Audio (WMA) with Digital Rights Management (DRM) copy-protection added. The versions of this protection varied, but the bottom line is that iTunes can't do anything with a protected WMA file, regardless of the DRM technology being used.

That said, the iPod cannot play WMA files anyway. However, iTunes on Windows will offer to convert unprotected WMA files to MP3 for you when you import them. Mac users would need to find some other way of doing this, as iTunes on the Mac doesn't have the advantage of the built-in WMA libraries that are found in the Windows OS.
