I mentioned in my previous post that my grandson has received an iPod Nano 8GB for his birthday a month or so ago.
When he plugged the iPod into his notebook today he got a pop-up regarding update to his iPod: He now has 9.1.0.79 and the update mentioned was 9.1.1 which was iPod and QuickTime and the total was a very large 92.44MB Also, a Safari 5 (I don't know if he even has previous Safari on his notebook) which is 31.22MB. Both of these files are quite large and I wonder if he needs to download them at all. Does he need them? Can he get along without them? Please advise and thank you. Alice P.S. Forgot to ask about him taking a video with the Video Camera on iPod. He can view the video on the iPod, but how can he view the video on his notebook? When he looks in the "My Computer," he doesn't see the iPod listed. When the iPod is connected to his notebook, shouldn't it be seen as a separate drive in "My Computer?" |

The "pop up" is not related to his iPod but rather the software program iTunes. The file size is NOT large (a couple of albums worth of music are more than this) and is about average for an iTunes update. Keep in mind that it won't be taking up much in the way of additional space on the computer since it will be replacing the current iTunes install and once the temp files are cleared that will be the end of the downloaded installer. That said, you don't have to upgrade unless you get a newer device that's not supported by your iTunes version, but, on the other hand, you miss out on any bug fixes and improvements to iTunes by not upgrading (of course, you also get to miss out on any new bugs
).The Safari prompt is an annoying "quirk" of Apple's. They offer to upgrade it even when you don't have it (this would actually install it). Just check it and select "Hide updates for this application" to get rid of the prompt. Safari is not needed for anything related to iTunes or iPods, Apple's just deceptively and shamelessly pimping to increase their installed market share base. If you're not seeing the iPod mounted as a device, check the "enable disk mode" on the general tab for the iPod when its docked in iTunes, it will then show up as a drive in "My Computer" until ejected from within iTunes. The movies are in a DCIM folder like any other digital camera device.

Or should that be "Enable Disk Use" on the main page of iTunes? |

iTunes doesn't really have a main page, it shows whatever you click on in the left hand source pane. If you click on the iPod in the source pane, the very first tab, the one that shows by default, is the one that has the checkbox for disk use. The other tabs are for managing the various media types that can go on the iPod, e.g. there's one for music, one for movies, one for television shows, one for books, etc...
