Question 5G Battery Issues

Hello all,

First time poster.

I've got a Nano 5G (after 2 previous iPod classics) and I can't live without it as I travel quite often and it keeps me from having to listen to everyone talk and cough on the flights. I got it instead of a Touch because I wanted something small, yet useful. Nonetheless, I really love it.

However, I have a problem with the battery. First of all, the battery life seems quite poor. I've had it for about 5 months and it rarely runs more than 3 hours playing music. Not very good at all. Secondly, when I attempt to turn the iPod off by holding the play/pause button, the screen goes blank and I assume it's turned off. However, the majority of the time, when I turn it back on, the battery is completely dead and I get a "connect to power supply" message before it goes black again.

I even lock the device but this same thing happens again and again. What is going on? I never had this issue with my classic. It would sit shutdown for a month and still have plenty of juice left. This week, it's been in my bag for 4 days and already completely dead.

Did I get a bad apple? (pun intended) I got it in Hong Kong from a reputable reseller and it is genuine, but it seems something is definitely not right with the device.

Thanks.

I would definately say that you have been ripped off by this genuine seller. He might have been genuine, but he might have sold you the iPod intentionally with a bad battery to get rid of it. You just lost $100 or however much you bought it for, unless you fork out $40 for a replacement battery, or send it to Apple for a arm and a leg.

Fortress is a reputable chain in Hong Kong. This was not bought in a street stall. It syncs with my Macbook and the serial number was legit when I registered it.

The question wasn't about the authenticity of the device, it's about why it won't shut down correctly.

At the moment it's probably a balance between makeovers and families - since we only started makeovers in Feb, these are likely to edge ahead. Then it's babies, pets, commercial.

I'm sorry, i didn't mean to say it like that. What i meant to say was that it was a legitimate iPod, but he just ripped you off.

But then i did some research and found out that iPods in Hong Kong and iPods in the U.S. have different voltages and batteries, so the macs and PC's in Hong Kong charge them differently than they do here.

Maybe this will help your problem.

It is still possible to get a bum unit from a reputable dealer with out being "ripped off". Since it is a new generation iPod I would go to an Apple Store if available or contact Apple Support for repair or replacement.

iPods charge by a 5v USB voltage no matter what the battery which is a standard on all computers available around the world. Some older computers which do not have 2.0 USB compliant ports may not charge some USB devices usually because they have a lower amperage or wattage output. Apple does not change the batteries or charging circuits in iPods for different areas of the world. This is also true of other electronic devices. Most chargers for portable electronics these days will automatically switch for proper charging with the different input voltages, which range from 110-240 volts AC, from the mains in many countries but will still output the proper voltage for charging.

It is simply likely you got a unit with a bad battery, call Apple, it's still covered by a warranty.

Read Charging your iPod battery for more battery info.
