I had this problem, and spent the afternoon doing everything that everyone described. (delete, reinstall, unplug, replug...) Nothing worked. I am running XP Pro on two unique hard drives and iTunes would not pick up on either.
I was about to try the rename the drive letter trick. When I pulled up the iPhone in windows explorer and saw an odd file named "download" inside my image folder. The last time iTunes talked with my iPhone, my machine crashed while downloading a rather large application. I deleted the file called download from my image folder, and at that very same moment, iTunes found my iPhone. Go figure! Thanks to the guy that mentioned the drive letter rename trick! As I type, iPhone firmware is doing an update. Life is good!

Hi,
I just want to thank you and let you know that I had this problem, but now it is solved. In fact, the problem was because of a program called " Power ISO virtual drive manager". The program creats virtual drivers. So, I just luched this program and disabled the virtual drivers I had created previously. Now....Itunes detected my iphone (3gs) properly. I hope this will help someone. Best Regards, |

I have a problem with it downloading the software first time I plug it into comp. It said it cannot find path of above download and I re-tried downloading it 4514646431484984 times and it never works.
I changed my driver to a higher letter and it didn't work. Do I need to re-start comp? Last edited by alawson; 08-21-2009 at 08:02 PM. |

I too had this issue with the 5th gen iPod Nano in XP. The info at Apple's support site didn't help. Although, I did see that typically the iPod's disk drive is drive E:. I noticed my two CD-ROM drives were drives E: and F:, forcing my iPod to drive G:. So I used the Windows Computer Management tool to change the drive letters of my drives. I changed my CD-ROM on drive E: to a different drive letter, and changed the iPod drive to E:. Then I unplugged the USB cable and plugged back in, and that fixed it.

You have to tell us what is "not working".
There are steps to try depending on what is happening. For example, if the iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes there are some solutions, but if the iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows there are other solutions. I am running Vista 64 with iTunes 9 and have 4 iPods syncing to it. Usually the steps above can resolve the issue.

I HAVE READ EVERY SUGGESTION POSTED BEFORE TAKING ANY ACTIONS. I HAVE AN EARLIER VERSION OF IPOD NANO 2G AND NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT. SO I STARTED BY PULLING OUT OTHER CONNECTIONS FROM MY LAPTOP'S USB PORT- IT DIDN'T WORK. MY ITUNE VERSION IS 9.1.8.0 SO I CAN'T FOLLOW THE SUGGESTION ON CHANGING ITUNE FROM VERSION 7.6 TO 7.5. I ALSO DID NOT CONSIDER THE UNINSTALL/RE-INSTALL SUGGESTION OF THE ITUNE SOFTWARE BECAUSE I HAVE 7 LANGUAGE LEARNING SOFTWARES INSTALLED IN MY IPOD (TOTAL COST IS HIGHER THAN THE PRICE OF MY IPOD). i WAS WORRIED THAT IT COULD BE DELETED KNOWING THAT THERE IS A ONE-TIME INSTALLATION AGREEMENT FOR THESE SOFTWARES AND I CAN'T RE-INSTALL THEM ON THE SAME IPOD. I HAVE CHECKED FOR ANY MEMORY CARD INSERTED- THERE IS NONE. SO I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT DELETING ANY NEWLY-INSTALLED SOFTWARE ON MY LAPTOP WHICH COULD BE THE CULPRIT. BUT WAIT, I JUST THOUGHT ABOUT RESTARTING MY LAPTOP AND YES AFTER THAT MY IPOD GOT RECOGNIZED BY ITUNES. HOWEVER WE MANAGE TO FIX THE PROBLEM DOESN'T REALLY MATTER FOR AS LONG AS WE FOUND A WAY TO GET AWAY WITH IT. AGAIN, THANKS TO EVERYONE ; ) "BEFORE TAKING ANY DRASTIC ACTIONS, PLEASE TRY TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER- SOLUTION COULD BE AS SIMPLE AS THAT AND IT WORKED FOR ME" FERDI |

I reinstalled iTunes and the problem went away. But it was a little more complicated than that.
I have a fairly new 64-bit windows machine. When I connected the new nano, the system installed a 64-bit driver. But when I went to the Apple/support/downloads page to install iTunes, I picked the first download choice, for XP, Vista, and System 7. But this choice is for a 32-bit machine. I should have taken the 2nd iTunes download choice, for Vista or System 7 on a 64-bit machine. All was ok after I uninstalled the 32-bit iTunes program, and after I went to the Control Panel Device Manager (Universal Serial Bus controllers) to delete the incorrect USB Mass Storage Device driver (it was showing an exclamation point next to its name). Then I reinstalled the 64-bit iTunes, and connected the nano again. |

I had the same problems and my computer wouldn't identify the 5th generation video ipod nano. I troubleshooted my ipod for 4 days doing all the stuff that people had mentioned a multitude of times. I even went to the apple store and they said that they couldn't do anything, that it was my computer, not the ipod. What I did discover were there were a few things that were for some reason preventing my ipod from being recognized and those were a few 'Apple' programs installed in my laptop. They both were "apple mobile device" and "apple software update" upon uninstalling both those programs my ipod finally works. Don't be afraid to uninstall the update software because I noticed that the last time that was used was when I first redownloaded itunes and as for the apple mobile device, you don't need that at all unless you have an iphone.
Due to these two programs being intact my ipod was read as a camera/phone not an ipod. Hope this helps. Email me at k.krilanovich@gmail.com if you have any more questions i'd be more than willing to help!

This happens to me sometimes too. Anyway usually all I do is restart the computer and it works! When I follow the directions saying to unplug it and then plug it back in, it doesn't work.

I was having the same issue. My computer uses windows vista. I spent 3 hours trying all the troubleshoots (uninstall/reinstall, unplug/replug, restart, different usb cable, different usb port, unplug usb cables etc....) After almost throwing my ipod out the window I downloaded the 64 bit version of itunes and my ipod was able to connect and sync. I was very frustrated with the process and thought apple made more user friendly products that that. But I am glad that I was able to find a solution. I hope this helps to anyone who is having a similar experience as me. Apple need to provide better troubleshooting documentation.
