I was having the same problem and found a temporary solution. When you plug it into your computer it works, but when you take it out it doesn't work anymore. So I kept the adaptor in my ipod but unplugged it out of the computer and IT WORKED!! You have to carry around the adaptor but it works!

Yes! Our's stopped working after being in a Logitech docking station.

If I shake the Nano it will start plaing a song in shuffle mode. Like everyone else, I have reset it multiple times, restored it, flicked the lock switch backwards and forwards. Still the buttons don't work (other than to reset).

When I took the cap off the bottom, unscrewed the screws and was attempting to take out the guts, I fixed it! I had a small knife jammed in behind everything (knife on the inside of the backside of the casing), and it was working fine. When I took the knife out, it stopped again.
So, I took a playing card, folded it in half and wedged it in there so it was under the buttons (but again, on the inside of backside).

Now it works. Has for a few weeks. My theory is that the wheel and buttons need a certain amount of pressure pushing the guts against the front to work. After a while they sink and stop working.

Anyways, that's my solution. I know it doesn't make much sense because I know nothing about ipods. But, the description of my problem matched hundreds of others, so I hope this helps!!!
THank YOU Sir i love you ! i fixed my ipod and it works fine! Life is peachy again

This issue was driving me nuts but I experimented with different headphones and found this made the difference in my case.

I have 2 sets. One set is older with no volume control, and the other set has the volume buttons on the headphone wire.

I noticed if I have the volume-button headphones in, most of the button/wheel features on the ipod nano do not work.

If I pull the headphones out, everything works.

So I tried the older headphones which do not have the volume buttons, and the ipod works fine like that as well.

I am pretty sure this is because I was jogging with it, so I'm quite sure I got a bunch of my disgusting sweat in the volume buttons on the headphone wire and freaked them out.

Anyway I suggest trying your ipod nano with the headphones unplugged and see if that works. If it does, you may just need to new headphones. You could try borrowing a friend's to confirm a new pair will likely work.

Good luck, let me know if this helps.

Thumbs up Thanks!

Thanks a bunch guys! Had the same problem as a lot of you(hold, connect, restore, sync and reset works, nothing else). First, I packed it in toilet paper over the night(removing moisture), then I punched it against my knee(as a lot of you did), and then i used a sharp knife and a card to stick into the bottom. Don't know which of them did the trick, but now it's working like a charm. THANKS!
