I've got exactly the same problem like mentioned before! (iPod Nano 4G Firmware v1.0.4, on Windows Vista Home Premum, Itunes v8.2.1.6)
I've found a kinda poor solution by mistake... my brother took my (broken?) Ipod, started to shake it a lot and what happened?? Suddenly these damn buttons worked again! ![]() Of course I was happy then and could use my ipod until the battery was gone, but as soon as I connect my ipod to my computer for charging, the buttons stop working again!! ![]() Then I have to start over and start shaking it... sometimes it works really quick and sometimes you feel like you've been shaking that thing for hours without any luck! -,-; It's been like this since about 3 months meanwhile and I've searched through the internet a lot already, but unfortunately I haven't found any solutions and so I stick to that whole shaking thingy.... ![]() I still have warranty for my iPod, but sending it back to Apple seems to be exaggerated as everything else works fine! So finally... does anybody know what to do? I'd really appreciate it, thanks in advance! ![]() PS: I'm tired of people telling me "only reset your ipod several times and it works again".... it doesn't work, I've tried it enough already!!

this stopped responding a few weeks ago, can't reset as need to hold down menu button. Any solutions other than pulling it apart? Mine is out of warranty and apple service charge just under £100. Computer recognises it and can sync etc, only way to get back to base menu is to sync to pc then once you've selected play list or whatever, you then cannot get out of it

sadly, shaking didn't work for me! In my case, its only the menu button, the other 3 still function fine
if still under warranty, just send back to apple |

This happened to me, too. I tried shaking it, but that didn't work. Then i tried reseting it, plugging it into my mac, and reseting it again after opening iTunes. I downloaded some restoration stuff, clicked a few buttons, but after a minute or so i was free from the entire mishap! I can finally use my nano again!

Alright, so this is perhaps the solution for 5th and 4th gen. nanos. I had the exact same problem, and frusterated with following all the steps Apple suggested so I attempted to take my ipod apart.
When I took the cap off the bottom, unscrewed the screws and was attempting to take out the guts, I fixed it! I had a small knife jammed in behind everything (knife on the inside of the backside of the casing), and it was working fine. When I took the knife out, it stopped again. So, I took a playing card, folded it in half and wedged it in there so it was under the buttons (but again, on the inside of backside). Now it works. Has for a few weeks. My theory is that the wheel and buttons need a certain amount of pressure pushing the guts against the front to work. After a while they sink and stop working. Anyways, that's my solution. I know it doesn't make much sense because I know nothing about ipods. But, the description of my problem matched hundreds of others, so I hope this helps!!! |

I had this same problem too but for me all i did was just hold down the menu and center button and it restarted then the buttons worked for me or you could do a software restore if that doesn't work and if THAT doesn't work then you should go to the Apple store and hope that they'll fix it for you :-) Good Luck

I've got a second generation Ipod that's experiencing the same aforementioned problems (none of the buttoms work including the scroll wheel except the manual reset and the lock/unlock button). I usually leave the device hooked up to itrip in my car and last week I went to play a song and none of the buttons would respond. I was able to reset is by holding down select and menu (center and top buttons) but after that my ipod has been completely unresponsive (stuck on music selection screen). It is out of warranty by a long shot and I have tried virtually all the 'fix it yourself' techniques short of cracking it open, which I'm trying to avoid. I have updated it on itunes, but didn't go for the complete restore, since it seems like that hasn't worked for anybody and it wouldn't be worth adding another woe to my problem. Neither the shaking nor the hitting it against my knee has worked. For those whom it has, which side did you hit against your knee, the silver backing or the side with buttons? dfmiller1101, if you're still there (I think your posting was some years ago) how on earth did you crack open your ipod using only your finger tips. It seems like there is no way to open a second generation ipod without causing visible damage to the exterior by way of prying it open. I am open to any suggestions and although I have called Apple they were not very helpful and had no explanantion as to why this happened, since I am positive I had not dropped it or spilled any liquid onto it prior to it not working. Thanks in advance for any advice. Cheers

A couple of weeks ago my ipod would not be noticed by itunes when it was plugged in, even though it could access it through other ways on my computer. Then yesterday my ipod encountered the same problems other people were having, the keypad didnt work and i could only reset it. Then things got worse when the damn lock button got stuck on lock even though I had not put it on lock. So I looked on the internet and saw this forum and started doing some of the things other people did like banging it against something or shaking it. As i expected, nothing worked. So i decided that the next morning i would go buy some other type of mp3 player because this is my 3rd ipod nano that broke in the past year and a half. I thought this ipod was completely fu**** done. So I woke up the next morning, to my alarm, on my mofo ipod. My ipod works now because I had set a daily alarm on it, the alarm being a playlist of songs. This probably won't help anybody because they probably didn't put an alarm on it before, but if you do get it to work again, maybe just put like a little alarm and that might make it work if it gets broke again.
