Red face Headphone jack broken off - stuck in player

Hey,

A very clumsy friend of mine managed to break off part of the jack on her headphones, an subsequently pushed it into her nano. It clicked, and now part of that jack is stuck in there. Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove it? I know opening the nano is not all that easy, or without risk, but once it's open, how much easier would it be to get that tiny piece of metal out?

I thought of another possible solution: put some instant glue on the remaining side of the jack, push it in, hope the two parts stick, and pull it out that way. Anyone here ever tried anything similar?

Thanks in advance!

I'd lean towards Eric's needle nose before I would consider super glue! One wrong move and it could be less than reversible!!

If I remember right, the headphone connector in the nano is sealed in it's own plastic enclosure that may or may not come apart easily. Just a thought, a locksmith may have a tool use for extracting broken keys small enough to extract the broken jack. Another option may be to try a Jeweler, they have some pretty small tools for watch repair.

As a last resort, if you have to use glue, don't apply it to the broken piece. Use a small dab on the end of a small finishing nail that's been ground flat. With a steady hand you will have less of a chance of gluing the broken jack into the connector.

My girlfriend broke the headphone jack in her new Ipod Classic
Not knowing what to do and given that it cannot be opened as far as I know I checked this forum and I tried with superglue. I was very careful to ensure that nothing gets on the ipod. I turned the Ipod upside down before inserting the broken of part of the jack and then let it dry for half an hour. Afterthat I carefully took it out in one piece
What a joy

Ive the same problem. Will apple fix this in warranty?

Hi,
I have the same problem with my ipod . THe tip of the headphone jack was loose and it remained stuck in the ipod. This ipod is barely 3 weeks old. Wanted to know whether apple will replace this one. Reason I ask is coz there is no apple store nearby so they are going to send me a box to ship this ipod and if they are just going to send it back then i would like to try my hand first with superglue or something like that.

thanks

fixed it through superglue

Thanks for the recommendation, but i gave a shot to what someone had suggested in this thread. Applied some superglue to the broken portion of the cable and plugged it in, waited 15 secs and took it out and the other end came out with it.

The really hot paper clip

I had success with this method, although it's not without some risk:

Unfold a paper clip and heat one end of it over a naked flame (candle or gas hob will do it).

When it's really hot carefully push it into the iTouch and then into the plastic shaft of the headphone jack so that the plastic melts onto the paperclip.

Being careful not to move the paperclip around too much, let it cool for a few seconds and, if you're lucky, you should be able to pull the whole thing out.

Worked first time for me, having failed with super glue, tweezers and a fish hook!

Just used this and it worked like a charm! I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to give some confidence to anyone who happens to be looking for help on this problem like I was 10 minutes ago. Thanks for that recommendation, toby64.

I tried to post a photo of the final product, but new members aren't allowed to post pics (how convenient). If you want to see it, here's the link: tinypic(DOT)com/r/xp4m4h/7

Use a drill bit

I used a 3/32 high speed drill bit w/o the drill of course. I held the drill bit w/ a wrench and twisted until there was enough into the jack and pulled. Also I held the Ipod above so that any shaving would fall out of instead of into the Ipod. Worked like a charm.

Thanks @Toby your method worked great for me. Was done in 2 mins. I was in the same situation, earphone jack had broken off and stuck inside the ipod nano. Followed your instruction and was done in literally 2 mins. Here are the instructions I used:
(1) Unfolded metallic paper clip.
(2) Heat the paper clip over gas stove till the tip became red hot.
(3) Immediately and carefully inserted the clip into the broken earphone jack stuck inside the nano.
(4) After inserting let cool for sometime (I let it cool for only 30 sec and it worked). Don't move the clip before cooling.
(5) Take the clip out and if all works the broken earphone jack should come out too (The plastic of the broken earphone jack should melt and stick to the clip).

Best of luck
