My Itunes Library has 247 songs, totalling about 800MB. When the Ipod updates the about menu says that I only have 172MB available. This is a 2 gig Nano. I should have about 1 gig left!
I have deleted everything and started over, restored and started over. I even tried importing in a different format one of the times that I started over. Has anyone else had this problem? It should hold around 500 songs and it is looking like I will be lucky to get 300 on it. This is actually my daughters ipod, but I am setting it up for her. I am getting seriously frustrated!!! |

Are the songs in aac 128kbps (the standard import format for iTunes)? If so a 4 min. song should take up about 4MB. If they are encoded at a higher rate each song will take up more space. Apple's estimate is based on 128kbps AAC. Double check the encoding rate.

Maybe they're all encoded at high bit rate, Apple claims that the iPod Nano 2GB can hold 500 songs at 128kbps AAC, which is just slightly higher than Stereo Quality. You have to re-encode all the songs to 128kbps AAC, then import them onto your iPod. There is also the matter of how long the songs are.

Yes, they are. Or, they were. I deleted everything, restored and started over. This last time I used MP3 but still used 128 kbps. The thing that I don't get is that in the itunes library after all the music is imported, the library says that I have a total of 247 songs for roughly 800 MBs. When the ipod is updated, shouldn't that match the library? If it is 800 MBs in the library it should be the same on the ipod! I am going nuts and apple has been no help.

they will only match if you are auto syncing all songs and playlists. you need to set this up under your ipod preferences. let me know if you do not know how to do this.

my about menu has been frozen at 50.7 available on my video ipod since day one. Itunes seems to be more accurate. I haven't bothered to delete and reinstall because I don't really need to know how much is available on the road. There's too many other itunes/ipod drama to wrestle with than to get caught up in available space read out.
