I tried the procedure that seemed to work for everyone else, but now my Nano is just completely dead. An icon appeared shortly after I formatted it, but disappeared quickly, and now the whole thing is just dead. No reaction when I plug it in to the computer, no reaction when I try to reset it (toggle hold, press down menu + select buttons).

Any ideas?

What happens when you plug it into your wall charger?
Have you tried the five r:s at apple:s website?

I had the exact problems as the original poster. When I followed the steps to fix it, I hit a snag. When I try and use the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool I clock start, then OK to format, then it pops up a window saying that the target drive is write-protected??? WTF. Why does Apple have to leave me iPod-less like this!! All I want is to update my iPod and use my Nike+iPod!!! PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Try a reset by holding the center button + menu for 5 seconds. Also make sure that in Windows explorer (My computer) your iPod is not set to Read-Only.

I reset the nano and then reconnected it. Its still acting just the same. I looked through all the menus in My Computer and properties for the Nano drive but can not find any write protection menu options. Where can I find this?

Screw the HP format tool. Its a piece of $hit. It kept giving me the message that my device is write protected...

Long story short, I tried to use the Windows built-in storage format tool and it worked flawlessly (simply right clicking the device in My Computer and selecting Format).

If you are having probs with the HP tool, just do what I did. Its all working as it should now.

That's what I was going to say. That worked for me when my old Shuffle would not respond to iTunes or the Updater. I didn't uninstall iTunes or anything either. Just did the format in Explorer (make sure you choose FAT32) and then the Updater recognized it and I restored it and then iTunes saw it.

I did the same thing, used the Windows format tool from Windows explorer using a right click, It worked very well, thanks! One thing to note for anyone interested, it seemed very slow after right clicking. Patience required for the sub menu, since the disk is all messed up, thanks to Apple!

I'll tell you, this is the most frustrating thing I have had happen yet with Apple. Ridiculous! Thank goodness for iLounge and the people in this forum. Thanks guys/gals.

I've closed everything and I'm very confused now

I understand your frustration. If I were you, at this point, I'd uninstall iTunes and the iPod Updater (your music should be fine, but I'd back it up to be safe). It sounds like something is not closing properly

Then I'd install the Updater and see if it can see your iPod. Good luck.

I don't hae any music on it anyway, I only got it yesterday and had this problem ever since !!!

I'll try everything from scratch again,

so let me get this straight

1) uninstall itunes & updater
2) reboot
3) launch the HP USB tool
4) format ipod & fat 32
5) reboot
6) install itunes and updater
7) reboot
8) connect ipod and launch updater

is that right ??? please reply

Well, if this is a new iPod, I would do 1 and 2 and then just install the Updater and try to restore it that way. You shouldn't need the HP tool for a new iPod. If that doesn't work, I'd take it back.
