When a song is selected to play on my sons' ipod it shows up and then immediatly goes to the next song. Any suggestions?

What kind of song is it? Purchased? Ripped? Downloaded from P2P?
Try resetting the iPod. If resetting doesn't work, restore and resync the iPod. Sometimes if the iPod skips a song you can press the back button and it will play the song.

Purchased songs only. How do I resync and if I restore will it delete everything on it?

Yes a restore will delete the iPod.
Are you on automatic or manual update? make sure that the song is authorized on your computer and update the iPod. Read here for more troubleshooting: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300766
