Well, if you've actually tried everything everyone has already suggested, you may be out of luck since that would pretty much represent the sum total of everything everyone can think of to try.

Why don't you give us a little run down on what you've already tried that hasn't worked for you. That might prove more helpful.

1.) reinstalled itunes and the ipod setup (several times)
2.) tried to hold the menu + center button
3.) tried to hold the play and center button

when i check in the device manager...theres no yellow exclamation mark anywhere...but there is an "unknown device" which is the Ipod...

Before we go to a full-blown Restore of your iPod, have you:

1. Tried Resetting the iPod (press and HOLD the Menu and Center buttons for up to ten seconds) WHILE the iPod is connected to the PC?

2. Using are USB port on the rear of the tower PC's tower? Front mounted USB ports often don't carry the same amount of "juice" as ones connected directly to the motherboard.

3. Have you checked to see that your PC has USB 2.0 support?

Ive tried using the front and the back USB ports.

And yes, my computer has 2.0 support.

In that case try the following:

Open the Device Manager and expand the tree for the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Find the Enhanced USB Controller, right-click on it and Uninstall it. Reboot. Give Windows a few minutes to reinstall the device after rebooting. Connect iPod and cross your finger's.

Well then...Plug in your iPod and run the iPod Updater. (Under start menu--->iPod--->iPod Updater(date). Click restore.

If the updater doesn't recognize it, then try using the HP Formatting Utility (Google it) (Maybe a little extreme)

Have you installed the Windows XP Service Packs, SP1 and SP2?

You're having driver issues from the sounds of it. Even without the iPod software installed, Windows should use it's own native drivers to mount the iPod as a Generic USB Mass Storeage Device. It's not, and the device is unrecognized in the Device Manager. The only reason that would happen is because the correct driver is not present. The USB 2.0 protocol drivers were included or, at the very least, updated in one or both of the Service Packs.

Well friend, 'fraid I'm out of ideas. You could reformat your iPod using the HP Formatting tool, but I don't think that's going to do you a bit of good as there's no reason to believe the HDD itself is bad. You could try it though. Not much to lose.

Good luck.
