When I plug my ipod nano into my computer, it charges it, but won't recognize it. I have been using my ipod for over a month with almost no problems.
I have been through all of the 5 R's with it connected and with it disconnected. I have reloaded software, downloaded new software, restarted my computer and in a desperate moment I unplugged my computer just because it seemed resonable at the time. I would appreciate any suggestions. Oh, I did buy a new cable, same deal. It charges but won't connect. Thanks. |

PC or Mac?
Assuming it's the former, what version of Windows? Have you tried connecting the iPod to your PC and Resetting it while it's connected? Try that first. If still no joy, we'll opt for sterner measures. Edit: Sorry... re-read your post. Time for Sterner Measures, I see. Do you see your iPod listed as a Generic USB Mass Storeage Device in "My Computer"? Do you have a green Safely Remove Hardware icon in your system tray? Try the following steps: Connect iPod to PC Click on Windows key + Break key (The system properties window will open) Click on the Hardware tab Click on the Device Manager Scroll down to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers tree and right-click on it Click on "Scan for hardware changes"

Yes I do have a PC.
No it isn't listed as a green icon. It doesn't show up anywhere. I tried your instructions, it scans and nothing happens. Oh, I have windows xp. |

Okay then... being a bit of a pill is it? Time to up the ante.
1. Windows key + Break key. 2. Hardware tab, Device Manager. 3. Scroll down to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers listing and expand the tree. 4. Right-click on the Generic USB Hub listing and click on "Uninstall". 5. Reboot. 6. Wait a few minutes for Windows to reinstall the USB driver. 7. Connect your iPod, cross your fingers, and hope Windows mounts your Pod as a Generic USB Mass Storeage Device.

Ok, I hope you are still here. It worked. It is now saying it is a unknown device. I tried to use my ipod updater, but nothing happened.
Also, my screen on my ipod is the regular screen, not the do not unplug screen. What should I do now? |

Never mind,
it worked, it worked, it worked. It just took about 5 minutes before the computer recognized it as an ipod. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, MILT |

Glad to hear your 'Pod is, once again, submitting to your will. We were one step away from Corporal Punishment. Never pretty, that.
Just to wrap this up, and for anyone else who might be reading and applying the above steps, uninstalling the Root Hub in the Device Manager and rebooting causes Windows to basically kind of reset your USB device controllers. The several minutes of delay for the iPod to be recognized (I was aware of this delay and should have mentioned it) was due to Windows having to reset numerous USB controllers. Once it did THAT, it began searching for installed USB devices, found the poster's iPod and subsequently installed it. Lag-time for this process will depend on the overall "strength" of your system. The faster your processor, the more system RAM, etc. your system has, the faster this process will go.

My nano isn't recognized by the computer any more. Used to work great.
I've tried all the usual things, reset, disk mode... Computer doesn't recognize it at all. Ipod doesn't stop playing music when I plug it in. Charges fine. And works fine other than computer can't connect. Doesn't work on wives mac either. My wives 80 gig classic connects just fine on both. I'm guessing at this point its a hardware issue

I have a second generation iPod nano and when i connect it, it doesnot detect the device. It charges the iPod but it does not detect the device itself.I tried the usual. Scanned my computer many times with various different softwares that are reliable and still no luck. Most of the time it works. This has only happened 3 times before and most of the time i just drain the battery and plug it in my laptop and it works. do you know what the problem is? I have a Windows Vista.

@tpohlman: Did you also check Disk Management (Right click on My Computer and go to Manage > Disk Management) to see if your iPod is shown there?
@cel657: Welcome to iLounge. Can you try the same thing as mentioned above? Also, did you try disk mode as well and that didn't work? Did you try using another USB cable?
