The "new breed" of filesharing is different. Branded P2P, for Peer to Peer (or Pirate to Pirate (LOL)) it does away with a central server altogether. Instead, you download the required software and Pirate A connects directly to a whole bunch of other Pirates who use the same software. Pirate A can then access the personal file librarie's of all the other Pirates currently online using the same application, while all the other Pirates can access the file library of Pirate A while s/he is online. Since it's direct connection (so to speak) between Pirates, there is nothing to "shut down" as there was with the Napster central server. As long as data can be transferred across the Intarweb, there will be P2P ... and Piracy.

So, if I understand correctly those P2P "networks" are basically a bunch of people using the same software such as Limewire or what have you. These people, when they are on line, essentially steal from one another, right?
Then how do they get caught for illegal music download? Their IP addresses will never be the same, thanks to DHCP. So if I bought an album by say, John Doe 5 years ago, I cannot download the same album into MP3 format in order to listen the songs using my iPod? That's just #### me off!! The record industry is robbing us in the name of copyright if that's the case. I paid for the songs once, why should I have to pay for it twice? I don't see any writing on all my vinlys saying I cannot convert them into different media. This just makes me wanting to pirate music. So what is a good software to use?

if you will use a p2p program such as ares, bearshare, limewire etc then make sure you have a spyware/adware protection on (microsoft is good) so you can delete the extra adware it comes with. (you must agree to having it on your computer in order to use the free versian of p2p program) if you dont delete it, it will spwn real annoying pop-ups...

i tryed to reply to unreal kid and i was going to say, i think it wouldnt be worth the time, or money to set up false downloads, and you would need hundreds to track all the people, even half the poeple.
but i may be wrong, on the other hand, if you set up a false download of the char toppers and you put that in, i think that that one may get some hits. but i could be wrong ben elwell

Well having re-read my first post, I overstated something. Allow me to clarify.
The Napster server contained the actual songs being "traded". In a P2P network there IS a central server, but it does not contain any "tradeable" files. It's an "Index" server - keeping track of what every Pirate has to offer, if you will. These servers have been shut down on rare occasions, but the sticky wicket is that these servers don't actually contain copyright material. Think of it this way. There's a website with links to illegal material. Sure the material itself is illegal, but is the holder of the web-page breaking any laws for simply linking to it? <-- Rhetorical question. So, sorry for the confusion. My fingers obviously got ahead of my brain in my last post. There ARE servers involved in P2P filesharing, just not the type of server (a la Napster) that I was thinking of.

The way they catch people is not by the people downloading, but when they upload.

its this protected wma #### that gets me mad. they're like, asking for people to steal music. It's so complicated for subscriptions, and it won't work for ipod. they better work out something.
I used rhapsody for a few months with my zen micro and i tell you, it was FAR from being as convenient as itunes. limewire's good, bittorrent (uses mininova or torrentspy) is good, if u have a good app like utorrent. use limewire first though, bittorrent is good for finding songs u can't find on limewire. chilll out people, the RIAA isn't going to search these forums and sue people... if they do, and if they're reading my post right now.. well i live in canada, so boo hoo, and you have no proof, so boo hoo, and it sad taht you're searching forums for people to sue, so boo hoo to you.

I've been searching for a legal alternative to purchase online music other than iTunes.
I can understand keeping DRM on music files, but I still think iTunes is overpriced. In this era of online commerce, I can't believe there are very few choices to purchase iPod friendly MP3s (AAC). It seems protected WMAs are everywhere for a competitive price, but none are compatible with iPods. Anybody know of RIAA (U.S.) friendly iPod fillers? Last edited by kdogg; 03-02-2006 at 05:03 PM. |

You could go to your local library branch and checkout CDs and rip them to your harddrive.
You could go to allofmp3.com. You could borrow friends'/family members' CDs and rip them. Any number of ways if you really want to avoid buying CDs on your own. Heck, check out used CD places in town. You can get new(er) CDs at places like those for a lot less than a brand new one. |
