first of all, i ordered a 4gb nano and it's shipping right now!
i got my first ipod last december: a 20gb 4th gen. i'm just wondering, how do you justify buying multiple ipods? i've been debating heavily whether or not i should sell my 20gb. the reason is, i can't justify having 2 ipods. but what is itching my mind is all the storage 20gigs is. when i was shopping for ipods originally, i thought of getting a mini cuz that's was the new, cool thing. but i thought, "just $50 more and i can have 16 more gigs." and that was hands down my answer. now that the nano came out, i'm having the exact same discussion, but the only difference is that i already bought the nano. and i know i want to keep that no matter what. so my new debate is: do i keep my 20gb? i'm leaning towards selling it and my main arguements is that: 1. why do i need 2 music players? 2. by selling the 20gb, i can make some money back and the main "con" is that i'm still losing a lot of money, cuz like you've all seen, when you break it down, i'm spending $62 per GB for the nano, where it was about $12 per GB for the 20. i guess it also boils down to, how much music do you need at a given time? i do find myself listening to the same songs a lot. so 4gb should suffice. it's just always "nice" to have ALL your music stored in one player... what do you think??? |

i used to have an old 62meg mp3 player. i quickly grew fed up with that so i bought a 124meg after a while that grew annoying around this time i stumbled across ipods so i saved my cash and bought a mini. since i could store so much music i just kept downloading. within 2 months the mini was full. so once again i bought another ipod (my 20gig) i dont see myself filling that up anytime soon. what im saying is just keep upgrading as you need. the nano to me seems like a downgrade. i mean sure it looks nice but thats about it. how do i justify keepping my mni? well idky but i still got that 62meg around. i just cant throw stuff away :-p really tho i think its because people love their ipods so much they just cant sell em. i have no reason to keep my mini around but i just cant seem to get rid of it.

i'm going through the same dilemma as you. i bought the 4g 40gb ipod back in january 05, so its still relatively new, to my taste anyways. thought about the nano when it came out and was one click away from buying it that thursday (the day it was released). the reason why i wanted the nano was that it was slim and its easier to put into my pockets, rather than that fat 40gb. i have about 5000 songs on my ipod and i probably listen to only 200 songs... that also justified getting a nano.
but i figured that $250 is too much to spend on something i already have (an ipod). its like if you had a civic, and they came out with a civic hybrid, would you replace your current civic? if you did, then i'd suggest that you sell the old one. don't think about the money you'll lose for selling your 20gb cuz you know eventually you won't use it anymore and the value of it will be even lower. think of it this way, 1000 of your favorite songs all the time or 5000 of all your songs some of the time? (and during that 'some of the time', you'll be listening to only a couple hundred of your favorite songs anyways, something that the nano will give you)

There was my mistake. After that my addiction started. Now i'm only 14 and don't get too much money, but i have been saving diligently for a nano and am now up to $94.53. So soon, very soon, I'll be getting it. Sorry, I kinda strayed from the topic, but you get my idea. DT

Two iPods for me - one for the full collection and some files, one for the music I like to have with me on a trip.
I covet the black nano, but I already have a 1st gen mini. After several aborted trips to the Apple website, I decided against the nano for these reasons: - My mini still works fine - I have a sh**load of accessories for the mini - Apple will likely release a higher capacity nano next year So I decided to hang on to the mini until the battery starts to fail, then I'll get a nano.

I am getting a nano 4GB, but doing it by trading in my 20GB 3rd Gen' through podswap (still waiting for their stock of black 4GBs to be replenished). The rationale is that the longer I hold onto the B/W 3rd Gen, which I've had since Jan' of 04, the less money I'm finally gonna be able to offload it for.
I've been wanting a color iPod for a while now, but I can't justify swapping my 20GB B&W for a current color model, knowing that sooner-or-later apple is gonna launch a video-capable 80GB+ iPod. I don't want to be left with a current color model, plus a brand-new video model (which I will inevitably end up buying), ans these models would have some redundancy. So, by buying the nano I get color now, which is what I want, but I'm also a bit future-proof, because it leaves the door open to buy a big color video iPod when they finally get launched, and the nano will be a perfect companion for such an iPod. The nano plus a big video iPod will have no redundancy of function between them, and will be used for different things. make sense? |

I [will] only have two when the Nano comes. I justify it in that it is much smaller than my regular pod since I've come ot realize I only listen to so much music before I get sick of it and move on and the fact my other battery is dying really helps out the conscience

I sold my 4G 40Gb iPod to get the nano (plus $40). It's amazing how little iPods depreciate. I guess keeping the box helped, as did always keeping my iPod in a case so it looked very new even nearly a year later.
Anyway, I got my nano yesterday and I don't regret the decision at ALL. I put everything that I'd want to listen to this week on it and still have 400mb left for some other stuff, and the overall experience with using the nano is so much better for me that even just after a day going back to my 4G is unthinkable. Sure, I'd prefer that the nano had 200Gb of flash memory and 50 hours of battery life, a larger screen (not a larger nano - just a bigger screen for its body - maybe with a touch screen and virtual click wheel so that the whole body could be a display) and of course that it would not be as easy to scratch (although even riding in my pocket with my cell phone I still don't have any but a few scratches on my nano, and those are on the chrome side, not the face or the screen). I just feel better using the nano. I have joie de nano.

I'm having the same problem. I love my nano, but my mini has some things that are better, like the battery life, and some worse, like the negative color screen. I'd love to keep both and use them both equally, but its really hard to.

wow. thanks guys. all of you had really good input.
enjoisoad--in a sense, the nano does seem like a downgrade: 20gb->4gb. but the "upside" to it is of course the smaller size and beautiful looks. aluren--you made a great argument, and it was exactly what i wanted to hear. i do exactly what you just said: even though i have 5,000 songs i only listen to a couple of them. the nano has the functionality that i need: just listening to those "couple" of songs. i guess that justifies keeping the nano and selling the 20gb. mrdantownsend--"iPods are like crack." haha i think you're right...Dopial--that's a good point. kinda planning for the future. jough--"I just feel better using the nano." i think that's exactly what i'm realizing (even though i dont' even have the nano yet!!) that's because my primary purpose for getting an ipod was to take it w/ me to the gym. but right when i got my 20gb, it didn't feel right. it was just too heavy. and i'd see ppl in the gym w/ their mini's on the armband and i considered switching to a mini. but then the nano came out and i jumped on that. all of your input helped easy my mind. thanks ppl. in conclusion, for the purposes that i need it for, it seems like the right decision to keep the nano and sell the 20gb. |

The only thing I don't understand is how could you listen to 5000 songs anway. I have the 4GB nano and i don't even listen to all of the songs. As said earlier in this topic, you really only listen to 200 of them and when you get sick of them, just delete some. With 5000 songs I would always be clicking to the next song (I use shuffle most of the time) because I would like that song but not enough so I would just go to the next song. But then I would go to the next song and on and on.
Just my point though....

The only way that I can justify on concidering getting a second iPod is if I wanted to have one to leave in the car. I have a 4gb nano I just got today, and I would consider buying a 4g 20gb nano if I was to keep it in my car, with my nano with me on the road. But that would only be because I was too lazy to switch songs in and out of my nano.

I bought the nano for use in the gym and short trips. This is the same reason I bought the minis (now sold).

well i have only about 3 GB of music and have had an mp3 player for about 5 years (a old one that used a sd card, loved it, used a triple a battery and was so small..but anyways then i got the original ipod christmas of 01.
the battery is failing and i always wanted a mini. once i saved enough money (this summer) it was new ipod season. so i decided to wait. i spent that money and then was gonna get the next new mini whenever tjey came out or a 5G. i got a job at the fair (big thing here, comes for a week, get outof school and everything) and im gonna get a nano. the reasons for me is the battery life on mine is failing and my ipod is so out of date. now i couldnt justify my parents getting me a nano, but this is my money i earned it so i really dont feel guilty spending it even if it was on like a diamond encrousted toothpick, i mean its my hard earned money. but my old 5GB im keepiong bc its not worth it to sell. il end up using it as a portable external hard drive. even though its not a high capacity oh well. but i dont see a need to get a huge ipod since i odnt have enough music. maybe once i get like 10 GB of music il get a high capacity ipod but i dont see the need. and since i also every week go through and delte a song or so that i dont ever listen to i dont really have a growing music collection. just a changing one. sorry for the REALLY long post. maybe it wont look so big once i post it.... |
