I know there are many topics on this, but I really am torn between the two colors. I am concerned about the scratches and smudges that appear on the Black ipod. Is it really that bad? I'm the kind of guy that will probably drop the ipod at least once (I actually got a few scratches on my mini). So do you think it's a big enough issue to sway me towards a white one? Because I know I'm going to get scratches regardless of the color...but I would rather have less if I can. What do you people think? Is black really that sweet to disregard the scratches?

I have the 4G white nano. And here is the reason why I picked it over the black. THere are many small devices that are in black. Remote controls, credit cards, cell phones. etc. Small black devices are just not that unique. While I do think 4G iPods in white look dull, the white nano looks sleek BECAUSE it's narrower and the corners are proportionally less rounded. The black also looks great...when it's brand new, but after a few scuffs, it won't shine as much as the white. I compared the two models at my Towson apple store and the white/chrome just contrasts better than black/chrome since the chrome kind of looks like black. Another reason is that with so many people picking the black, white is more unique.

The main question is do you care about scratches?
If not pick the colour you like most, I suggest going to a store with some on display and chose the one you like most. If you do care about scratches and are generally annoyed by them then I think the white one will be more for you as I believe the black one shows scratches more. |

Yeah I do care about scratches. Its like a pet peeve of mine, lol. I like the colors equally, maybe black a little more, but I just don't want to have to care about scratching it as much. Thanks for the advice though, its helping.

After a few years of white iPods--and millions of 'em sold--there's no doubt that the black nano makes a sexier, more striking impression at first. In fact, I went into the NYC Apple Store to buy a black 4GB Nano, but left with a white one instead. Why? Once you've actually handled one, you realize that the high gloss black finish smudges very visibly with every touch, AND it shows scratches like crazy. So, while black may look better in marketing photos and out of the box, it's going to be a different story in actual use. Neither smudging nor scratches is a significant problem with white, and a white Nano still looks pretty fabulous.

According to Michael Jackson, it doesn't matter if you're black or white. lol
I walked into the Apple store intent on buying black...up until the time I picked up their black display model and saw how badly it showed the fingerprint smudges, etc. I changed my mind on the spot. Please keep in mind that I'm pretty much a neat freak. For someone more laid back than I, or someone willing to keep a cleaning cloth handy, the black might be great. When cleaned up it looks fantastic!! (not to mention a breath of fresh air if you've come from a long line of signature white iPods) |

It's all up to personal preference, but it's true what they say about the black nano showing smudges and what-not, but I still went ahead and got a black one because it's just so cool and odds are that black or white color the user is gonna get a case for it, so it kind of negates the original decision for whatever color.
But I must say I am quite impressed with sound quality of the nano. I'm actually usuing the default white buds (taking a break from the E2's) test driving my nano with Jazz EQ and it's not so bad. Anyways whatever color you choose I hope it works out well, but as long as you do get a nano I suppose that's the important part

White.
1. Smudges/Fingerprints, bad. 2. Who knows if the black will actually catch on? It's a known fact that white is iPod's color. If black does end up being a hit, it's not like white won't be cool too, and you can just wait for the next iPod to come out and get that in black. No loss. |

I got the white for two reasons: First, I actually like the look of it better. Second, I think I will be buying the nano tubes or a similar translucent case that will look better with the white.

Hi guys! New here. Planning to get a nano really soon.
I'm thinking of going black, and now I am concerned about the scratches and smudges that you guys mentioned. Any pictures for me to check out? They don't have nano in Malaysia yet. |

i ordered the black, and i'm planning on getting like a vinyl cover for it. i hope xrap makes something for it, cuz that'd be near perfect for stopping scratches and smudges while still showing the ipod itself
