I'm using UBS 1.1 while I'm building my new computer and I got my 4G 20 GB iPod all of my many mp3s, but now, even when auto-detect is on, the iPod when plugged into the USB port wont detect the iPod anymore. Earlier today it worked after i randomly alternated restarting itunes and repluggin the ipod, but now nothing. When I plug it in now, it just charges, it wont detect the ipod anymore. I'm using Windows XP and the auto updater wont work because it wont detect the ipod in the first place. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance.

Try these troubleshooting tips: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711.
You may need to change it for the iPod to be recognized. You can go to: -'my computer' and right click on it and select, -'manage' - double click or select in left side - 'disk management' - then double click on or select in left side window and change the letter to 'I' or 'E'.

I just left my iPod connected to the USB overnight to charge, and naturally the batery was dead, so I'm thinking that, since the iPod needs to be charging in order to recognize the computer (i.e., have an ongoing power supply), then the reason it's not recognizing is that my USB 1.1 is too weak to carry the power. I'll try restarting my computer and seeing if that helps--maybe it'll give my USB a jump start.

USB will not charge your iPod.. only an Electrical Adapter or a fireWire cable..

boy2man... usb 1.1 is strong enough to charge the iPod... because i too have a usb 1.1 and it charged the iPod to full before but to be on the safe side, i suggest buying a firewire/usb2 port for your computer |

I'm having the same problem with my 4G Ipod and the USB1.1 connection. It has been working fine for the past 2 weeks, but all of a sudden, my laptop running XP won't recognize the device. I can insert a USB jumpdrive and XP will see it, so it's not the port. Any other suggestions?
