Question Computer won't detect my ipod!?!?!

hi, I just bought a 10 gig ipod off of ebay. I had to buy the special firewire cable that is used for sony computers. When I plug in the ipod to the computer, nothing happens. I have called Apple, but they are not much help. Itunes won't show the ipod nor will the software updater. I'm out of ideas on how to get my music onto this Ipod. Please help me if you know anything at all...
thanks,
Preston

-Did the iPod come with the disk?
-That special firewire cable might be the problem. Use the cable for the iPod. If you don't have one, get one, even a USB 2.0 would be better. Apple has them for about $19.99.
-Does the computer see the iPod as a hard drive? Look in 'my computer' when it is connected.

i have this same problem as well..

my ipod DOES get recognized in my computer as a hard drive.. i can see the calendar folder, and a few other folders.

but itunes does NOT recognize the ipod.. when i install.. it comes up with the pop up screen "do you want to configure your ipod now?" and i click yes.. and it just doesn't do anything; it keeps popping up without advancing.. i assume this is because it's not detected.

can anybody help with this problem? it's been driving me nuts.

I can't help, I'm just here to say that I also have the same problem.
I got my 40gig 4th gen iPod today, and my winXP box sees it as a removable drive but itunes and ipodupdate do not see the iPod.
EphPod *can* see the thing, but I'd really prefer to be using iTunes.
I have a win2k Laptop that has a little more luck. I need to shut the device down (via the 'safely remove hardware' icon) and then restart it again - while iTunes is running, and then I might get lucky... it's worked twice (and thats how I managed to format the iPod).

win2k laptop : usb only (1.1)
winxp box : usb & firewire (neither work for iTunes, both work for windows seeing the ipod)

I suspect that it's something to do with windows seeing the iPod as a removable drive before iTunes see's it - but I don't know what to do to solve the problem

Try these troubleshooting tips you can try: (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711). Any one or more of these could be causing the problem - Security software, firewalls, Realplayer or firewire card.

I didn't get much joy from that webpage (in fact it frustrated me more)

However, knowing a thing or two about the way programmers work (since I am one) I second-guessed the problem (for my particular case).

My Symptoms:
1. iTunes and ipodupdate can't see the ipod on Firewire/USB2/USB1.1 on my WinXP box
2. My laptop can see the ipod, and I configured it from there, but the XP machine still cannot see it.
3. Most 3rd party tools CAN see the iPod. EphPod, CopyPod both see it perfectly, MyPodPlayer needed me to point out which drive was actually the iPod.

Now I've got an unusual PC, I have no C: drive - I start at F:
this means that removable drives (like the iPod) come in as C:, which is fine... usually...
But I suspected this might be part of the problem (programmers assume that C: is your boot harddrive, but thats just convention)

So, I go to "My Computer -> Manage -> Storage -> Disk Management"
and change the drive letter for the iPod (while it's connected) to I:

and presto, iTunes suddenly realises I do actually have an iPod connected!

I doubt my situation will be the same as most people, but if you have other removable hardware it might be the case that changing the drive letter for the ipod (to something like I ) can get some results.
Either iTunes doesnt like C:, or something else (CF reader, etc) was watching C: ahead of iTunes - either way I've now got music

i've got around this problem by using other ipod software.. like anapod.. which works pretty good.

it's just itunes that acts stupid like this..

and the funny thing is.. i ALSO have my hard drive designated as F: and my ipod as C:

i will try assigning a diff. letter for my ipod.. thanks for the tip.

I've also supplied Apple with Feedback/Bug Report detailing the problem and solution - perhaps we'll see a fix in a future version of iTunes, or at least some info on their website.

I just need something that will detect my Ipod. It seems that no matter what cable I use that Itunes won't detect the Ipod. I have tried 3 different cables, and I'm just getting upset about this. I would appretiate it if anyone with ideas would let me know.
thanks
