I notice this quite a bit. When I'm at work I put the pod on all songs shuffle and a lot of times it will play 2 or 3 songs from the same cd within the first 40-50 songs, and sometimes it will play 2 songs from the same cd back to back.
I have 1749 songs and tonight its played 4 songs from the same cd in the first 60 songs played. Its played at least 2 songs from 4 different cds within that first 60 songs played as well. So within the first 60 played therre has been a lot of duplication from multiple cds. Just weird to me.

as with "every" hardware and software player, the random is not that random.
Try this. i created a playlist called 6 months. It is 50 of the songs i havent heard in the last 6 months. (I have over 3000 songs so the 50 is a good representation of 1 days worth of music for me.) Make sure that the random is checked in the playlist settings. When the list is played, the ipod creates a new one when i go back to it. Just use the smart playlists to their full function. Be creative with them |

It is almost ipossible to create a software that will to random things.Even the machines in the casinos arent really random. When a machine wins more then 2 times in one week they change it.The olny way to create a random ganerator is with a leazer beam that is being reflected on a semimirror(a mirror that olny reflects part of the beam).Which photon is reflected and which not ir truly random. But i dont think ipod has something like that

Actually, a geiger counter and a source of radioactive decay would work as well. I've always thought that would be a great peripheral, a true random number generator.

I suppose I'd have to invest in that lead iPod case... So much for the weight loss switching to the gen 3 model.

Ill tell you what is defintely random on the ipod. The colour of the screen. Its like Forrest used to say,
Opening the ipod is like a box of chocolates, you never know if you are screwed. ;-)
