I'm looking into getting an iPod photo and I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on the size difference between the 30GB photo and the 20GB 4th gen, and especially between the 30GB and the 60GB iPod photos.
I've played around in the store but its hard to get 3 ipods together so I can compare them. So far this is the best shot I've seen and it shows the 60GB, the old 40GB, and the current 20GB. the url of the pic which for whatever reason I'm not allowed to post is www[dot]the-gadgeteer[dot]com[slash]images2[slash]apple-photo-ipod-60gb-model1.jpg The 60GB would allow me to have my entire music collection with me(something I've always dreamed about) and all of my photos(something neat but hardly a must-have). But it just seems kind of thick. Anyone bought the 60GB and regret it because of size issues? Is the 30GB more likely to be compatible with more accessoires than the 60GB? Thanks. Mike |

I had a 40G ipod HP (regular), it was a good size, but I kept it at home before I got my speck toughskin
I got my ipod photo 60GB and toughskin from BHphoto the same day, when it arrived, i did a clean comparison. Its OBVIOUS that the size of the 60GB is thicker, but only by a few millimeters and definitely acceptable. The toughskins makes it about half and inch thicker, so.. the thickness would be defeated anyways if you were to apply a case to it (a must-have accessory-- protection.) 60GB is beautiful, I have thousands of songs and thousands of photos, with 15GB still remaining (photo functionality is very... well, ineffective, takes hours to upload a thousand photos-- processing time and upload)

Thanks for the reply DenZ. Too bad they aren't making single 60GB platters yet eh?
![]() I think I'll have to head to an apple store and try sticking a few in my pockets to see how they fit. Of course the big question is whether or not the clerk will mind if I spend 10 minutes putting expensive mp3 players down into my pockets over and over. |

i've been to the apple store a few times and i found the 40 and 60 to be way too big in thickness so i just got the 30gb.

If you see them side by side, you will likely opt for the 30. It is nice, trim and slim.
If you don't see them side by side and just decide to go for the 60 so you will have all of your music with you, I doubt that you will be walking around saying, "aw, this is too thick, it doesn't fit in my pocket." I suspect it is all about perspective and comparables. On its own, the 60 is totally fine. Next to the 30, it looks porky.

If you can't get a 30 gig photo, you should try borrowing a 10, 15, or 20 3rd gen iPod for comparison - they're only 3mm apart in thickness, and have the same dimensions other than that.

My main reservation about potentially buying a Photo last year was that I found the .75 inch thickness to be a bit brick-like. I had a 3rd gen 20GB, and I liked its size. When the 30GB photo came out, it barely differed from the 20GB, and that's what pushed me over the edge into buying it. The 60GB photo just feels bulky, like the old 40GB regular ipods. If you've seen them, with or without anything to compare them to, the real question is, do you think it's too big or heavy to carry everywhere with you? That's all that matters. But if you're asking for opinions, for me there's a line between the smaller ipods (10/15/20GB, 30GB photo) and the 40/60s, and the latter are just a little too big.
