When is a song considered "played"?

When playing songs on a playlist, or in general on my Ipod, when is it actually considered "played"? The Ipod saves the timestamp of when the song was played last, and you can use this info to setup automatic playlists (like make playlist with 100 songs I haven't heard in 2 weeks). I hope that they were smart enough to NOT make it "played" as soon as the song starts playing.

Possible considerations:
  • When song is loaded from HD to memory
  • As soon as the song starts to play
  • 10 seconds into the song
  • Halfway through a song
  • 3/4th's of the way through the song,
  • In the last 10 seconds of a song
  • When the song ends, and advances on to the next song

What I'd like is that the song is considered "played" 3/4th's of the way through the song. Not quite when the song is over, because I have a few songs that have a long pause at the end, or I just want to move on to the next song. There are a lot of times that I listen to the first 30 seconds (or less) of a song to recognize it, but I end up skipping it. I really don't want those considered played.

Anyone know for sure?

In iTunes, the song has been played when it ends. I would assume the same is true for the iPod.

That is how it's done. As soon as the songs i fully played. You can get around it, if a song is playing and you want to pass through it, but want it still to be counted as played, tap the center button and fast forward until just a few seconds are left.

Great, thanks... Knowing that will change the way that I play (the end of) my music.

The iPod does. But, only iTunes and MC9 can use this information.

It also keeps track of Playcounts (how many times a song was played) and of course Ratings (on 3rd geners) so you can change a rating on the iPod and the next time you sync up your iTunes or MC9 smartlists get updated (as do your playlists on the iPod).
