iTunes help

I got my iPod yesterday and I'm having a little trouble. I want to record my CD's into iTunes, and in the manuel it just says to pop the CD in and it will automatically appear on the iTunes menu. When I put my CD in, iTunes will not play it and another audio player plays it. I close the alternate audio player and try to get my CD to open up in iTunes but it just wont do it! I'm getting really frustrated because when I want to import a music file the only options are .XML files, .TXT files, and .HMU files. Why won't it import any .MP3s or .WAVs?

I'm incredibly frustrated and would definitly appreciate the help!

Sorry if the answer is completely obivouse, I'm not really familiar with iTunes.

Nevermind

Nevermind, I solved the problem. I was putting my CD in the CD-Rom drive instead of the CD-Writer drive...which is still a little strange.
