Hey everyone,
I've been trying to troubleshoot this all day but have had no luck. I'm not sure what caused this, as I used the IPod last night, but my Ipod is stuck in "locked mode". Moving the actual switch to the off position does nothing. And since the IPod is locked, the buttons do not work, which means I can't reset it with the usual menu/play method. additionally, my PC (running XP and using firewire) won't recognize it right now either. The only possible solution I can think of is to let the battery run out, and pray that I can start from scratch when it charges again. Has anyone heard of a problem like this before? Any other way I can unfreeze this thing? (Not sure if it means anything, but the clock is still running properly, and the battery meter moves as the Ipod charges. ) I can't imagine that the actual switch is broken, which would suck. PLEASE HELP ![]() -Jared jared@udel.edu |

And the case (i mean the white Plastic and metal back) is still alright? I mean, with my ipod they had shifted a little bit and then I had the same problem... by the way I could still use the remote - can you also?! When I snapped front and back together properly again, the problem was gone... =)

Yeah, the case appears to be totally fine..which is why I'm confused. There doesn't appear to be any physical damage.
The remote doesnt actually do anything, because i have no sort of playlist formed, and the screen is stuck on the "playlists, browse, extras, etc.." screen...the main one, so I cant add any songs... but my backlight does go on when I press a button on the remote. This is so frustrating... |

i had the same thing happened to me just today.. listening to a song while hold switch was engaged, then the music stopped suddenly. i looked at the screen and figured it was just the occasional freeze. i attempted to take it off hold, no response - the little lock icon stayed on the screen and none of the buttons worked. i cannot even do a reset. while it was still frozen i tried mounting it on the desktop - not recognized!
the hard drive spun for about 2 hours and then the whole thing shut off and is now unresponsive completely. im lost - what do i do? |

I'm still totally lost, and extremely frustrated. I let the battery die down overnight, and I put it back in the dock this morning. It booted up (I saw the little apple icon).... but the lock icon was still on! WHAT IS GOING ON? Again, no physical damage appears to be present...nor could I imagine anything happening, since the last time I used it I was laying in bed.
Any help? |

well, when I press play on my remote it doesn't matter where I am on menu, it just starts playing the first song (the first that would be displayed if you hit 'all' all the time) ...
Have you tried what it does after you've drained the battery fully?? jojo

A friend had this issue, he had to send it in to Apple for repair. He had the 15GB 2 gen, and he was given a 4th gen 20GB in return, as it got damaged in transit.

the 10/20/40 gig iPods aren't 4th gen - they're just new 3rd gen models.
The generation term also defines a hardware change: 1st gen: physical scroll wheel 2nd gen: touch wheel 3rd gen: touch buttons & wheel - new shape

This will most definitely work
