Does syncing replace files or just update and if update, what if you......

Seems like it wouldn't replace each file each time it's sync because that would be a waste of effort, but if it just update changes, what if you have a song in your ipod X at 128kbps (from another computer) and one by the same name in the itunes at 190kbps? Does it replace the 128 with the 190 or does it ignore it because it has the same name?

If you have auto-sync on, then it just updates your iPod. If you have a song in your iTunes library that has a bitrate of X and your iPod has the song of bitrate Y, I am pretty sure that iTunes will automatically sync that song to your iPod so that song Y is deleted from your iPod and replaced with song X. If you have manual sync then iTunes will copy that song to your iPod keeping both song X and song Y on the iPod as well.

So that tells me syncing is based on file names but it also scan other properties to see if it's different.

If you have a song title Happy at 128 and Happy at 160 in your ipod, and your itunes have a Happy at 190, what will itunes do .

Well if you use auto sync, and Happy at 128 and 160 is not on your iTune library then those songs will get wipe off of the iPod. And Happy 190 will be on your iPod now if it is in the Itune library.
