Ask yourself how much of a hurry you are really in.
If you need it, buy yourself a USB2 card |

I can't get a USB 2 card becuase i'm using a laptop. It does have firewire but it's 4 pin. I'm not really in a hurry I just wanted to get an idea in the difference in the speeds.

I run Windows XP and I couldn't even get the ipod recognised with USB 1.1.
They say you need min USB2 ... so I got a 4 slot USB card installed and it works like a charm. Problem is for you your laptop it's not so simple to get USB installed. If you haven't bought the ipod mini yet I would suggest you try if you can or ask them at least ... before you buy & open because I'm not sure it will work. |

FYI, USB 2.0 is theoretically, at maximum speeds, 40 times faster than 1.1 (480Mbps vs 12Mbps). I've also used the 1.1, and yes it's bearable but the difference is definitely noticable. It'll even charge through the 1.1 (contrary to what Apple says), though it seems to be at a slower rate. |

Yes I do have PCMCIA. and this card will add USB 2 to my laptop? How much does one cost and where can I get one? I already have a firewire cable so am I better off getting a coverter to sync and charging through USB 1.1??

I'm using the USB 1.1 with my mini and am not having to wait not to long. It's very livable.
I have a brand new firewire cable that I haven't even opened yet.

I just plugged my new 2nd gen iPod mini into my Mum's old iMac to transfer a few files across. It was fairly quick to do, and the iPod showed up straight away, even though she only has USB1.1, and OSX 10.2.8. Although Apple say the iPod needs USB 2.0, the reality is that it needs a fast USB1.1 port, or any USB 2.0 port I think. Mine was even charging from USB 1.1 just now, and the speed for transferring those files seemed bearable for transferring stuff onto a mini.

Man USB 1.1 is really sloooooooow.
USB 1 goes up to 12mb/s USB 2 goes up to 480mb/s FireWire is 400 mb/s Firewire 2 is 800 mb/s - not sure the iPod supports this.

PCMCIA will accept so many different kinds of cards it's hard to mention them all, but you can add extra USB ports (1.1 or 2.0), Firewire ports, wired or wireless network, etc., etc., as long as your operating system will support it (Windows95, e.g., does not support USB at all). Here's an example, with power adaptor, of a 4-port USB card at newegg.com. I can't vouch for this particular card, but I can for newegg... they rock. |
