iPod Keeps Erasing Songs

I have a 3rd gen iPod and the battery has recently deceased. I purchased a new battery and installed it, I then restored my iPod and began the daunting task of converting AIFF's to MP3s and importing CD's onto my iPod. After I had about 500 songs or so I decided to eject my iPod and head out of the house. Well...at first after clicking "eject iPod" the icon remained on the screen and the "do not disconnect" screen froze. After a minute or two the iPod did eject and showed the main menu screen. I picked it up and went to my artist selection only to find that everything was gone, EVERYTHING. It wasn't restored, all the songs were just gone. I know the songs were on the iPod too because I had ejected it once or twice previously and everything was fine. After I stopped weeping I repeated the process only to have this same problem at least 3 more times.

Does anyone know what the hell is going on here?!? Apple was no help at all and I'm getting incredibly frustrated. Please, please, please, help me.

Welcome. I suggest for you to try these troubleshooting tips:

First, did you charge the battery successfully before using? If you did not connect it to an outlet to charge then do so. It's a new battery and may need charging via an outlet not PC. If you've done this already:

Second, go to settings>about and see if space is being used. If so, then the songs are on the iPod and not showing on the screen - do a reset & see if they appear.

Thrid, download the current updater & do a restore again.

Every time it erases all the songs and I plug it back into the computer it runs scan disc on the iPod and after that's done it shows up on the desktop but not in iTunes. iTunes says it cannnot recognize it or something and to run the iPod updater and restore (which I've done at least 3 times now) I'm running all the latest software and the batter was fully charged before I attempted to put songs on it.

Try getting the disk that came with the iPod & reinstall it. Try setting it up as if it's the first time that your using the iPod & see if it will work then. The only other thing I can suggest is to go back and double check your installation of the battery.

Also did you try resetting the iPod?

I've got about 800 songs on it right now and if it happens again (knock on wood) I'll try the reset method and then I'll try the software and repost on what results I get. Thanks for your help though! Wish me luck.

Well, it's happened again...I tried to eject the ipod after I had over 1000 songs on it and it took a while to eject, then ejected and not much to my surprise when I went into "Artists" there was nothing there. I checked under Settings->About and it says 0 songs but it also says that I'm using up 4.2 of the 9.2GB I have on my iPod and that I have 5.0 GB remaining. I reset the iPod and checked again only the find the exact same thing. What is going on?!?! I'm afraid to plug it back in to my computer in case I have to restore it and the songs are actually still on my iPod. ANYBODY?
