Question Click Wheel Scrolling Lag?

Hi guys - I'm playing with my brand new (2nd gen) 4GB iPod mini, and I've noticed there's scroll lag on several of the menus and song volume, at least initially. After a few seconds, scrolling is smooth as butter, but the initial lag is really bugging me.

Is this a known issue? Is there a fix?

I noticed that at first also on the 2G (6gig). It would lag a bit at first then slowly become normal. I've now had mine for 5 days and the problem seems to be disappearing. Perhaps there is some kind of initial coating on the scroll that wears down with use. I have noticed that the wheel feels "smoother" to the touch than it did when I first got it.

No fix I'm afraid. Only alternative is to make your track names shorter so they don't have to scrolll. But that's going to be a bit of a nonsense really.

hotphil -

Let me clarify - my issue is with click wheel scrolling through the menus, not song track name horizontal scolling. There's a definite initial lag - I'm hoping it goes away like others are indicating it might.

I discovered the exact same issue with my 2nd gen Mini. At first I thought I had a defective unit so I returned it to the Apple Store and they gave me a brand new one. The 2nd one had the same exact issue. In addition to random lags when scrolling, I also found the click wheel to be stiff when clicking on the function buttons. I've had it now for a couple of days and it seems to be getting better. My guess is that they produced a batch with stiff wheels that need to be "broken in" a bit.

Thanks for the feedback mroy1.

I wonder if it's a software issue, as mine is pretty repeatable and usually clears up after a few seconds. I'll update this thread with any updates or findings.

i have noticed a similar problem with both of the 6gig minis that i have tried. scrolling through menus and songs seems to lag sometimes. the lag inhibits fast scrolling through menus and songs. when it happens, i simply take my finger off the click wheel and try again. it always works on the second attempt. i am going to try to take back the second one to the apple store. why keep a unit that has a defect if i am within my 14 days.

i fear that the problem is universal plagues all second-gen minis.

That also happened with my new 4GB Mini at first, but now I've had it for a week and now it's totally gone. Prety much the same as CakBar.

Mine seems to be getting better also but still not as good as the 1st gen I oringally had. That one was smooth as silk and this one definitely needs a little bit of breaking in before it is as functional. They must have changed their manufacturing process a bit to cause this to happen. I'm still within the 14 days so if it doesn't improve to 100% soon then I'm going to return it. Fortunately I have an Apple Store right up the street from me so it's no problem to return it.

Maybe, if it's a firmware issue, you can e-mail Apple and you might find a fix in the next firmware issue.

Problem is chipset?

I think the lag, which I too have in a 2nd gen 4 gig, is due to the new chipset. Being entirely more efficient means it must be conserving power. The user interface of the clickwheel may be suffering from a slower processing speed somewhere in the ipod system. This might be seen as the mini "warms up" and the lag diminishes, although not entirely. I think the mini has to orient itself when it turns instantly on...and due to a new chipset, may not be as fast to handle/accept and process input from the user (i.e. scrolling the split second the screen turns on).I have also noticed it tends to be a bit touchier than the 1st gen minis, as I "overscroll and underscroll" more than I did before. Not a huge problem but it does feel different than the first gen. I'm LOVING the 18 hour battery...so nice...the lag isn't too bothersome when you look at the big picture.

Ironically, maybe I should NOT have engraved ..::TurtlePod::.. on it?!

Hi guys,

I just got my 4GB Mini on Thursday and I've also had similar problems with scrolling. However, do you think it's a temperature issue? I notice that there's a temperature range on Apple's website for the iPod.

I walk around a lot at work so I got it clipped to my belt, but whenever I head outside for about 10 minutes or so, I notice my scrolling would lag considerably when I get back indoors. Then, after about 10 minutes it would scroll normally again.

Dunno, I think that's where my lag problem orginates from. I'm writing from my desk and it's so sensitive right now I can almost scroll the click wheel with my nosehair. (no, just kidding).
