Lost proof of Purchase, Apple support says ipod is out of warranty

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hi,
I purchased a 4G 40Gb ipod whilst working in the US September 2004. I have since returned home (Northern Ireland, which is a part of the UK) and after about six months of being extremely happy with my ipod if have got the problem with it where the touch sensitivity of the Click Wheel has failed. I have checked the forums and have tried everything so I have come to the conclusion that I will have to send my ipod away to be fixed, that I have come to accept.

I logged on to the Apple support site and entered my Serial number, I was informed by the site that my ipod was not now under warranty. Of course it should be still under warranty since I only bought it around 5 months ago. The option was provided to provide a proof of purchase (sent by fax or post) if I felt that my ipod was still under warranty. However, in my stupidity I have managed to misplace my receipt.

That is the background, I now have a number of questions,

1. I bought the iPod in the US, however I live in the UK, am I still eligible for warranty?

2. I have lost my receipt(my proof of purchase), can I request a proof of purchase? I have details of what Apple Store I bought the ipod from and still have the box.

3. Has anyone else experienced the website not detecting that their warranty is still available? I'm a little bit worried!

Thanks,

Alan Campbell

I would say since the 4G Ipods haven't yet been out a full year and the fact that the warranty is for one year; they MUST be under warranty! Logic should prevail

Did you try calling Apple directly, or did you just try the online support page and then give up?

I think you should call them. The computer may not have access to US serial numbers or their may be some other problem. Call Apple.

Same here bro

Man I am having the exact same problem. I also bought it at the US (Miami) but I have an extra complication. See i live in Mexico but i am currently studying a semester in australia. It had to be here that mi iPod bust. I also have the 40Gb fourth generation iPod.

I went to the Apple Store and was told it had a hardware problem=the only way to fix it is a replacement of unit. The thing is since i dont have mi proof of purchase i catn get it changed.\

So here is my deal. If anybody has a proof of purchase from the US of a 40GB iPod of the 4 generation, i would really appreciate if you could send me a copy. Actually it could be quite easy, you just need to fax or email it to me.

Please if somebody aout there reads this could you please help me. You all know how important an iPod is to you. I am truly depressed and need your help.

Why don't you call Apple America? Here in the states, they'll ship you a free return box so that shipping is totally on them. Send in your iPod, get it fixed or replaced and shipped back to you at no charge. Since you purchased the iPod in America, it only makes sense that Apple America would be the "better" option.

While Apple America may not give you free shipping (for obvious reasons), if you pay for shipping both ways I'm sure they'd be willing to work something out with you. Without a proof of purchase, they could use the serial number on the back of the iPod to determine the approximate purchase date, and if you're not within a month of the warranty ending, you should be fine.
