Top right should have the battery sign looking like it keeps on changing, like it keeps on filling up over and over.

If you can't see it, then hold the 'play/pause' button down for a few seconds. This will put it on sleep mode. Do this while it is charging. Then it will pop up with a picture of a battery on the screen if it is charging. If it doesn't, then there MIGHT be a problem.

when i plug it in it either displays a apple sign, or a battery with a ! mark. Is that right?

When I charge my iPod mini, I either see what Canadian_Man described (when charging while turned on), or a large battery with filling up over and over again (when charging while turned off).

if you see the Exclamation Point with a file....then most likely, you prolly either plugged in your iPod to the computer before installing the iTunes software....OR you might have a corrupt file. I think you can either Restore the hard drive using the iTunes CD that was in the box, or try restoring to the original settings, if it lets you. I dont think it will let u do the second thing.

I had similar problems with my iPod when i first got it too.

If you're not plugging it into a high-power USB 2.0 port, then it's not charging. Most likely you're plugging it into a USB 1.1 port, and that's why you're seeing the battery symbol with a !.
